Re: Biomass to Fuel?

I think liquid fuels will still be essential for farming and agriculture. There's no way a farm can produce a few thousand tons of wheat on solar+battery powered tractors. So biodiesel makes sense in this instance. Smaller farms growing high value produce (horticulture, flowers, medicinal plants etc...

Tesla Model 3 battery teardown!

CpCrkO1x-Qo The guys at Autoline Network have put a Tubecast together of the Model 3 teardown where they discuss the BMS, onboard controls, and of course, the battery  The cooling system was always going to be an engineering challenge, given their desire to pack as many cells into the spac...

Novec is pretty phenomenal in all aspect$$$, including its ability to weep right through most common fluid sealing interfaces. Quite the fluid to contain long term in complex systems, but possible to do.

See that enormous radiator at the front? If they are immersing the battery in Novec or equivalent fluid with a quarter of the heat capacity of water, they will need 4 times as much radiator :)

Very cool though.

Yeah nobody has doubted the energy storage figures, and even the cycle life is good (really, 15,000 cycles would be enough) but to call it a supercapacitor instead of a lithium titanate cell is simply marketing.

Don't change the mV limits though as it...

Re: How to measure -60V to 1000V

Yes capacitance on these HV packs would get super hairy. Particularly those with aluminium enclosures so close to the full potential of the pack. Working on live stuff (if you must) at these voltages is serious stuff. As for measuring voltage on a 1000 V pack, I use a voltage divider on Voltron and ...

Re: Is is it possible to build a 48 or 52v battery pack using removable (non soldered) 18650 cells

The thing I find with batteries is that the best battery is one which is built fit-for-purpose. If an application calls for 30 kW continuous, and 30 kWh of stored energy, you will need a cell capable of 1C continuous. If you felt like you could get away with 15 kWh instead, but you still need 30 kW,...

Re: Why not Panasonic 18650pf

Do take into account the maximum continuous discharge rate, as the higher energy density cells have higher DC impedance. This means under sustained loads they will sag to a point where a less energy dense cell would have delivered the same number of Wh at a higher power rating. For example, high C-r...

I'd never be happier to be wrong! The thing is, this is a promise of orders of magnitude more energy density than the most advanced capacitors on the market. There wouldn't be an issue with the disconnection and re connection, but a pre-charge circuit would definitely help extend the life of the mating surfaces.

Perth never gets 100 mph (160 km/h) winds. I calculated the wind load on these arrays and it worked out to about 25 kg-force per screw for a 100 km/h wind. Plenty of strength in the fixings, but thanks for your concerns all the same. "Is there a reason you didn't go with a grid tied system?" Yes, we...

I use Andersons for big stuff, or Amphenol HVSL conenctors for high end applications. But with 50 mm2 cable that's not unreasonable.

And 600 amps calls for at least 95 mm2 cables. And even then, that's for a 5 second burst.
