Re: A ride through the flat, Dutchy forests

In the car to the Veldhoven hospital emergency room I went where they took it out and gave me two tetanus shots. That was the last time I went off roading through the high grass. You wouldn't last long in Virginia. My wife likes to garden, and typically digs out several dozen every summer, with one...

Re: Anyone use fairings? Why not...?

The problem with a fairing is that it adds weight and bulk to an otherwise very basic vehicle. For me, and most people, we don't generate enough speed to make it worth hauling up hill. Had a Zzipper on a V-Rex back in the 1990's for one winter. Great for wind chill reduction but amplified noise, and...

If so, then its commercial success (or lack of such) points out the rather weak cost benefits of fairings for most riders.
It points out that upright bike riders are the most conformist people in the world.

Back in the 1990's, this guy used to ride in many of the IHPVA races.

It seemed like the most practical, effective upright fairing going.

Re: Chevy Bolt first drive

OK, here we are into the first week of November. October 15 is the average first killing frost. We haven't even gotten below 35F yet. Oh, well. Let's talk about cars. We went to visit a relative last week. Couldn't take the 362 miles of interstates from Virginia to Tennessee, because of one missing ...

Re: Dyson EV

Yup. Everything available is totally conventional cars, with electric drivetrains. Cool cars, for car people. The car needs to shrink until it is small enough to drown in a bathtub, for it make any difference. Something between a velomobile, and this.

Re: 80 new EV models from VW by 2025 !

Yup. Totally cynical PR. The problem is that car companies make the most money on the cheapest to produce, most polluting vehicles. And buyers benefit from lower prices, while telling themselves it must be OK, or the government would force them to buy cleaner vehicles. We get the planet we deserve.

Re: Introducing the Electrom

Glad you are back. I love your bike. Being able to get it on and off the centerstand, while seated, is very cool. Watching you pass cars on the right is a bit scary. I get right hooked occasionally, even while in the lane. Going around seems like asking for it.

A tranny O-ring leak, drivetrain returned for analysis, now car computer won't recognize new drivetrain. Several cars with failed modules of one sort or an...

Re: What will it take to make ebikes, More mainstream ?

The embodied CO2 of our Bolt is still massive...3,500 pounds of high tech materials and huge amounts of energy to mine, transport and produce. Our first world transportation is obscene, and totally unsustainable.

Re: What will it take to make ebikes, More mainstream ?

Putting a price on CO2 would do it. Cars of any type would quickly become unaffordable, and we would have the roads to ourselves. :-)

Tuesday, 9am was a cool, windy, start for a ride up to Skyland https://www.nps.gov/shen/learn/historyculture/skyland.htm on the Skyline Drive. I took my usual scenic route to Culpeper, and had lunch at Baby Jim's Snack Bar. https://www.flickr.com/photos/kevystew/27592426132/ I took Rt. 522 north to ...

For five and a half years I pulled 24 Ah/80% out of the pack on almost every ride. By the end of May, in 2016, I was still pulling 24 Ah out of the pack, but the voltage was sagging. So I put the extra Leaf module I had from the eight module pack I bought for my cargo bike back in August of 2015, in...

Took the Bolt to a local hot rod show last Saturday. Everybody was friendly, and a few were even curious as to how it worked. Without driving it, it is next to impossible to convey how cool electric drive is. The next day I went to an Electric Drive Week event. The owners were, of course, on board. ...

Yeah. In the last month, every car company has made similar announcements. The impetus comes from governments, in many countries, announcing plans to restrict or ban ICE cars by (pick a date, always after you are out of office). Each storm, fire, flood, famine/mass migration, from here on out, will ...
