Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

..But that is not adding to the overall hydro capacity available. Hence the proposals for adding a lot more generation to existing dams. Unless you have a suplus of water that you currently run through spillways, more generation will not increase total capacity (GWhs). ?? You yourself mentioned how...

I cannot see Hydro increasing significantly, ...all the "easy" developments have been done so any future hydro will be limited and have a tough economic case. Further, it the climate alarmists are to be believed, there may not be a much river flows to feed existing hydro....many of which are alread...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

So, in 10 yrs, you think you may have ~50% wind + solar ? Im willing to speculate the US never gets to that level. Probably not. We will likely get to about 50% _renewables_ - not 50% wind and solar - in ~12 years (i.e. including hydro) If you want to speculate on just wind and solar we'll get to a...

The US as a whole ??... Has only 11% wind and solar combined.
And doubling every 3-4 years. We are definitely headed in the right direction.

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

 :?: California has one of the highest power costs of any state ! Luckily the CA grid is connected to neighbouring states such that it can import the 20+% of power that it fails to generate internally ! I am talking about the US as a whole. Drastically increasing renewables, and a more relia...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

That grid functioned perfectly well ( and cheaply) without a battery, until the levels of Wind and solar increased to over 50%. OK. Our grid functioned pretty well before batteries and renewables. Now it functions even better. Perhaps there are some lessons to be learned there? If , as claimed, the...

My friend has been riding the electric scooter (Smoov) for some time. He didn't have any issue with the police.
That means less than nothing.

If you are going to rely on it to get to work, find out if it's legal in your area.

Electric Scooter https://smoovscooter.com , Electric Unicycle http://www.airwheel.net/home/product/x3 , and Electric Longboard (homemade), which one would be the best for day-to-day commute? Scooter will get you there faster/safer/more reliably. Longboard will be more fun. Which of those is most im...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

bill, they have tried more Solar and more wind, ....its has not helped, infact it has made it worse by creating the need for more "fast response" thermal (gas, Diesel, etc) plants. Well, here in the US, the grid has become more reliable with the addition of more renewables. So it's certainly doable...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

Maybe there was a voltage conversion or transmission current capacity somewhere along that maxed out? Or a contractual maximum? Without some other constraint, it does seem like PV generation would develop a rounded peak, rather than a plateau, on a clear day. Trackers generally display a "mesa" sha...

If that's the case (generation shortage) then install more solar. That will give you more generation; more total energy.... And do what for the 18 hrs the sun is not shining ? I think you're starting to lose track of your own arguments. Cool. Then if all you need is generation, then install a lot of cheap solar.

However, I think you will find that peak demand still matters.

Re: Lithium batteries for Submarines

I've wondered this for years, and someone finally clued me in to the fact that nuke missiles have to have their warheads refreshed every so often, and light water uranium reactors can produce fresh plutonium as a byproduct. Well, they can't produce "good" plutonium - it is very dirty, and consists ...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

[The SA grid needs more POWER (600+MW). for long periods of time ..12+ hrs at a time, often much longer. Which means they need a lot of ENERGY, (7-10 GWh) I very much doubt they need it for "12+ hours at a time." Look at the demand curve; it peaks once, and it's not anywhere near flat. This new 210...

If this thing is intended to often run for 2 days straight then that makes it baseload? Just not a regular one? It's definitely not a peaker and not a load follower as they ramp down at night (less than 24hr usage pattern). Here in the US, there has been an attempt to define baseload as "plants tha...

.....yes..and of much greater capacity. That was my point ! No, you missed the point. If they need ENERGY, then solar or wind or a CCS gas turbine is a great way to go. If they need POWER to stabilize the grid, then BESS makes more sense. Do you understand the difference between energy and power? ....

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

Those contaminants you mention include plutonium. Reactor waste is a source of this element. Thorium reactors don't provide it in useful quantities, so they haven't been promoted or developed by those who demand a supply of plutonium. Right. However, thorium reactors do produce U-232 which is also ...

even that limited capacity diesel plant can provide 5+ GWh per day if needed. If they needed that sort of energy they should have installed a fast startup combined cycle gas plant. How expensive would a similar capacity BESS be ? Very expensive - because that's not what you use BESS for. If your re...

Like I said before, if you bought a car and it could only drive on average %23 of the claimed speed you wouldn't buy it.

I suspect there are too many powerful , influential , parties with big interests in existing energy business's...Oil, gas, Coal, Uranium, etc, ...that would not want to see Thorium succeed. Of course. And that's true of every new energy product that's come out in the past 200 years. And if you expa...
