Re: e-trike powertrain agni 95R with kokam 3.9kWh li-po

What kind of performance were you getting out of it?

I'm looking at 20+ Kw for a Moni motorglider. I know they have flown on a 95R but it appears to be pretty marginal.

Re: Farfles Electric Ultralight.

Pipistrel makes a nice plane.

They are selling them up here in Canada already.

Unfortunately the LSA rules specifically say that an LSA must have a single reciprocating engine. Someone was a bit shortsighted when they wrote that rule.

Re: E-Hawk: Electric Aircraft Build

I thought the guys behind the EMG had a motor planned out.

You could always use a pair of Turnigy rotomax's but be sure to get the voltage up.

Re: DIY ultralight, Retro biplane style, twinprop

He doesn't have enough power with those engines stock wind. The same ones were used a while back on a Lazair ultralight and they were marginal even after being rewound for more power. The Lazair is a really light aircraft with a huge wing area so it has very low power requirements. It is an interest...

Stick in your gut no matter what.

That Stratomaster looks good in your panel Farfle.

Re: N.E.S.E. the no solder module

I would stick with 3d printing for now but I would also find some way to reduce the hardware costs. Modularity is great but if I am paying the full price when I want a smaller module then the value gets lost. I have to say I was totally on board until you opened your store and I saw the retail price...

Re: N.E.S.E. the no solder module

As far as tooling goes you would decide what size is going to be the most common and make a mold for that. If you make a 6p enclosure the user does not need to install 6 cells if they want a smaller battery. I can tell you right now the price is what kept me away, and I have the 3d printer to make t...

Re: N.E.S.E. the no solder module

Going back to the injection molding discussion I have very recently turned a 3d printable design into an injection molded product. We did it because as you have found 3d printing is cheap for a prototype but is not capable of scaling up economically. The break even point in cost is around 1000 units...

Re: Kepler Bottom Bracket Friction Drive For Sale (Finally)

Finally got to do my first brief ride with this working today. It is shocking just how fast 500 watts will push a road bike. Probably going to tone that down to 200 watts or so to get some decent range. Still need to tweak the mounting a bit. Pushbutton throttle works but the 1000 microfarad cap tak...

Re: Farfles Electric Ultralight.

I suspect you will be able to push that motor pretty hard with the massive amount of air cooling available.

I have seen it fly on an Earthstar Thundergull which is a much bigger and heavier plane. The Belite is likely half the weight.

Re: Farfles Electric Ultralight.

The combined airspeed and altimeter were all I ever needed. Getting a low range airspeed indicator is important for aircraft like this since accuracy at the bottom of the scale is more important than at the top of it. The Stratomaster I have (its sitting on a shelf if you are interested in buying it...

Re: Farfles Electric Ultralight.

The downside of course is that you are always flying around with full tanks as far as W+B goes. It is less of a problem in a single seat plane but I rarely fill the tanks in my Cherokee because it limits what you can carry and slows you down when you don't need it. You have quite a bit going on in t...

Re: Farfles Electric Ultralight.

It should be OK. However the term "Dry weight" is being with modules removed if need be. Just be careful with "dry weight". Dale Kramer went that way with his electric Lazair (he as going to sell them so ensuring legal compliance was a necessity.) His opinion that the battery was fuel was allowed b...

Re: Farfles Electric Ultralight.

How is your weight budget looking? Far 103 is pretty strict with that 254 lb limit.

Looks like it will have tons of power. Belite makes neat little planes.

Re: Converting a MONI motor glider to electric

If done properly and isolation is incorporated into the design, you can safely manage up to 1000 volts without any exotic components. I work on high voltage equipment for a living. I get to climb inside and inspect the hydrogen seals on 24 kv bushings about twice a year. The neutral point on our ge...

Re: Converting a MONI motor glider to electric

Anything over 50 volts at these power levels is lethal. Perhaps it is just because in the field I work in lower current is always preferred over lower voltage. Any load over 200 hp jumps from 600 VAC to 4160 to keep the fault currents manageable. Heavy gauge wiring aside it just seems that a lower c...

Re: Converting a MONI motor glider to electric

I am looking at the high voltage versions of the motor because it puts me in the sweet spot for the target RPM. The lower voltage windings want to spin much faster to make rated power. I'd like to keep it direct drive for simplicity. The 30 kw figure would only be for takeoff and climbout would prob...

Converting a MONI motor glider to electric

It was suggested that this project should have it's own thread. I have a MONI single seat motorglider. It is not a particularly high performance glider and is more of an aerobatic touring glider. This is a very long term project and as far as electric power goes it in the back of the envelope stage....

Re: N.E.S.E. the no solder module

I am not talking about peeling from the print bed. I have been selling 3d printed parts for a few years and I have learned my lessons about what is easy and reliable to print. You have a feature on this design that has a 45 degree overhang combined with a thin wall. Where the bevel and the cylinder ...

Re: N.E.S.E. the no solder module

I mean the cutouts on the sides of the modules. The thin walls with overhangs make that part print poorly. Have you got any plans for a better terminal cover? Something that can cover the entire top to hide any balance wires and completely cover the exposed terminals? Should be easy enough to have s...

Re: N.E.S.E. the no solder module

Printed out a 3p module to see how it goes. Seems to print just fine without supports. I would prefer to have the sides smooth and just let the triangle cutouts get filled with infill, it would cut down on curling while printing. http://i.imgur.com/1pzlyXnl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/Q6wU17kl.jpg

That is true but aircraft have rather strict center of gravity limitations so it cannot be a single big lump. http://i.imgur.com/cxW1aMJ.jpg Everything has to fit were the existing engine, exhaust, ballast weight, and fuel tank were and maintain the CG. Re: MOTOR PORN !! EMRAX 228 teardown !!

For an aircraft higher voltage makes a lot of sense. I can build a high voltage battery that can easily handle the required current. If I try to make the same power with ~100 volts then I need a battery that can handle 300+ amps and require a higher amp hour battery not because I need more amp hours...
