Re: Tiberius checking in

Hi Luke, Stall speed is about 15 mph. The usual routine for the HPAs is to have wing walkers on foot for the launch and then another pair on bicycles chase the aircraft along the runway to assist with the landing. The designer, John Edgley of Optica fame, has been keeping this fairly quiet until the...

Tiberius checking in

Hello everyone, I haven't been on ES for a while. Sorry about that but I just got snowed under with projects. But even though I really did have too many projects on the go, along came one that I couldn't say no to. I was recruited onto one of the teams for this http://aerosociety.com/Events/Event-Li...

Re: E-bikes running with the Gas-bikes

I would refer you to the words of my nine year old daughter. Back in the summer, I took her to see an air race. We don't have proper air races over here any more; we only have handicap races aimed at making the sport more inclusive and accessible. I was half way through explaining the system, where ...

Re: E-bikes running with the Gas-bikes

.... PaulD and I have talked for hours together about how to make fair classes for gas and electric bikes. It always comes back to Tiberius' original suggestion of weight maximums. Why weight? Because you can check it in 10 seconds as a bike is rolling up to go on. It balances modifications amazing...

Re: A Summary Letter for the ES Community

I thought we already had a first to file system, at least over here. If there is no public disclosure then it's the date of filing that's important. When I was employed, many years ago, employers would pick up the tab for a patent application. But working for myself, I soon realised the expense and ...

Tiberius? maybe? KiM KiM must be loaded on some good weed. Tiberius (Nick) is a rock solid guy, and a huge opensource rights supporter, and would never lay down to be a slave. Its a petty small time rare poster here who sells here. I was disappointed that it was such a lame-ass, you wont guess it. ...

Bike rental in USA - more than a SUV?

Hi Everyone, I just got a text message from my son. He's touring the USA with a friend and he says it cost more to hire two bicycles than one car. Maybe that's just his way of explaining why they are driving round in a 4WD SUV. Actually, I suppose it could be the same over here. Car hire (auto renta...

Re: IDEA: Recharge as you travel

Contactless power transfer has been around for many years. I first saw it in an application where they had to connect and disconnect power cables underwater, so they used a magnetic coupler instead of contact pins inside the connector. There is also the familiar electric toothbrush, with a contactle...

This is what I do with my LVC. Something that just cuts out is a disaster; you want an "analogue" rather than "digital" control. Then you can carry on at whatever throttle setting the system can cope with.

Or your rich and lazy and don't want to get sweaty in 100 degree heat. :D Or you could get your manservant to do it. After all, he can't be spending all the time polishing. Seriously though, we do have some peeps using motorised tugs on fairly small planes. It doesn't take much of a ramp into...

Re: Building a Remote Control Airplane Tug... Any ideas?

We have an annual tug race at our airfield. The rules are pretty loose. Last year the air ambulance crew made a good showing with something loosely based on their helicopter towbar. The winner rode a motorised armchair. I entered a hovercraft. Nothing electric has entered yet, but I'm thinking one o...

Hey Luke, amazing work well done.

So let me get this right. There were two professional superfast motorbikes, a number of other electric motorbikes, and your bicycle. And only the two superfast guys beat you?

Re: Racing and the humble E-bike

A motors physical flux gap dimensions and the materials flux saturation density determine the torque its capable of reaching. From there, the power is entirely proportional to the RPM you can get the motor to spin. An astro at 5krpm is only capable of aproximately half the power of an astro at 10kr...

Re: Pedal only bike recommendations for 200 mile trip

100 miles a day is something. My son and his friends decided to cycle Lands End to John O Groats a couple of years ago. It's the standard trip from extreme south west to extreme north east of the UK. It should be about 850 miles but works out as about 1000 in practice. The self imposed rules were th...

Re: Thinking about hosting a race event.

Luke, Sounds wonderful. Spot on. Absolutely agree that it needs something to make sure its about electric bicycles and not electric motorbikes (or motorised bicycles and not motorbikes). We've discussed this in ES before and it always comes down to working pedals and a weight limit. There are slight...

Hi Luke,

Hard luck, but it was a valiant try. Sounds like you've got a good basis for another attempt next weekend, though. Keep it coming.

Bolting together a machine the day before and testing it in the race - I would never do a thing like that. :D

I just use the standard lead acid batteries supplied for the purpose and they last for years. They look exactly like normal vehicle batteries but they are slightly different and not designed to deliver starter motor currents. As you say, you've got to stick with lead acid as they are charged the sam...

Re: What about an Endless-sphere wiki?

Maybe it's just a question of indexing. If the search worked better, or people were better at using it, then most of the problem would go away. Peeps would be able to find a stack of info on whatever subject; they could then work out what to use and what to dismiss. At the moment it's people like TD...

The scores at the end of the first quarter..... I would like to see something, whether it's a wiki, a better search, or whatever. There have been a few threads recently asking about Jeremy. I had lunch with him yesterday and can report that he is alive and well and happy and kick...
