Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

Back in my grad school days doing field research on the Greenland Ice Sheet, we used solar arrays to power several of the experiments. This was at 78 degrees north, a full 12 degrees above the Arctic Circle, where the sun would just go around in a circle all day. We never had problems with snow cove...

Cobalt supply.. Ref ..J Petersen ..investment analysist/researcher If true, that represents approx 200GWh of battery storage. Even if its out by a factor of ten , its still a serious limiting factor Petersen is a con artist. He suckered hundreds of people into buying stock in Axion, a maker of lead...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

Wind power generation capacity in Texas now exceeds that of coal power capacity. Several coal plants are to be closed next year. https://www.texasmonthly.com/energy/wind-power-capacity-surpassed-coal-texas/ Battery storage for load leveling is still the crux for a bigger portion of energy from renew...

My trusty old Ping battery from 2009 is still going strong after all these years. Not made in USA though.

Re: Ping Battery Storage

I have a Ping battery that I have stored for over a year without charging or disconnecting the BMS. It held its charge just fine. I wouldn't worry about it if it's just three months.

Re: Battery Cost

I want to add a plug for the Ping battery. I have a 48v 20ah Ping that I bought in 2009. It saw a lot of use the first couple of years with maybe two 30-mile round trip commutes per week. The past 4 years it has only been used a couple times per year and sits for over six months at a time in my shed...

My old Raleigh Technium mountain bike had those. It's supposed to give you more power on the downstrokes. I thought it worked well enough. I didn't really notice it while riding.

Re: How long do batteries last?

It's hard to tell what the range is now. My round trip commute is about 10 miles. A few months ago, I used it on three consecutive days without a recharge and it didn't cut out. So still has at least 30 mile range. I'm still amazed that sitting in a shed in San Antonio fully charged hasn't killed it...

Re: Super Fast Battery Question

In short, yes, you can do that. Parallel would give you twice the AH and discharge current. You'd probably want to put some diodes on the positive power output wires to prevent one pack discharging into the other when they are not at the exact same charge. You'd also want to separate them for chargi...

Re: How long do batteries last?

That's interesting, seeing as San Antonio is a bit warm in summer. What temp would you say it's stored at? And apparently stored full too. This is the first I've heard of a Ping going much more than 4 years. If the battery is big enough, and the controller modest, it may be you don't notice the ris...

Re: How long do batteries last?

I have a Ping battery going on 7 years old. I don't ride it that much anymore but every few months when I pull it out, it is still fully charged and still has plenty of range. So probably number of cycles is the determining factor in battery life. Shelf life doesn't seem to be an issue.

That's pretty pricey out there in Cali. On my way to work this morning in San Antonio, saw $1.37 for regular. That's just insane cheap. Pretty soon they'll be paying us to take it off their hands.

Cows also produce tons of CO2 and greenhouse gasses. When it comes to CO2 emissions, I do my part by trying to eat as many cows as possible, and choking stupid people. I dont know if it will change the world, but I feel good knowing that I am doing my part. Cows are effectively carbon neutral. Gras...

Re: Electra Straight 8 Brake Options

The newer Electra Straight 8 models come with front disc brake and a choice of 3-speed or 8-speed rear hub. It would work pretty good for a geared front hub motor. Since you already have your bike, maybe you could call Electra support number and ask how to buy one of the forks from the newer model. ...

Panniers would be fine if not for the rear suspension. But without the rear suspension, it would fit in the frame triangle too. You can buy seat-post mounted racks with pannier mounts. I have one on my rear suspension mountain bike. http://www.amazon.com/Delta-Mega-Porter-Pannier-Support/dp/B000ACA...

Re: Possible to handlebar mount pelican case onto Genesis V2

Is your battery size really only 6" x 6" x 4"? That seems pretty tiny for a 48v20ah battery. How heavy is it? If it is really that small, I would just put it in a pannier bag. Or, maybe one of these over-the-frame (as opposed to inside the frame) frame bags would work. http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Pc...

Re: Voltage going down while NOT in use

Dumb question, but is your controller turned off with a key switch? One time, I accidentally left my controller turned on while the bike sat idle for several months and the battery drained slowly like that. I caught it before it hit the LVC but it had drained several volts over a three or four month...

Re: Battery Failing to Charge

What is the battery voltage when the charger is hooked to it? The website doesn't say what the chemistry is, but a 48v LiFePO4 battery should have max charge voltage set at 58.4 (3.65 v per cell), but it should be pretty close to fully charge even at 54.6 volts. When you say it is only charging half...

You can't just divide 100,000 by the death rate to get life expectancy. It doesn't work that way.

Re: Torque Arm missing - is this a problem?

Justin made those tests a long time ago, with a low power system and a steel frame. No matter how tight the axle nuts, they are not making the frame dropouts any stronger, only adding the risk of damage to the axle thread. Sooner or later the true resistance of the dropout will be tested by motor t...

Re: Circular metal sheet on + side

Will you be soldering wires or new tabs onto these? Soldering directly to the end terminals risks damaging the internals from heat, which is why they are typically spot welded instead of soldered. People do it though and get away with it. If you are going to solder to it, those high spots shouldn't ...
