Who commutes with a stealth fighter/bomber in Aus?

Postby nechaus » Thu Mar 01, 2012 7:47 pm

Hey just wondering if anyone here commutes with a stealth fighter or bomber?
and want to know if you have had much trouble with the police?

Is it okay in Australia to limit the power to 200 watts? and your legal?
or can it only be a 200 watt capable ebike? aka Children's toys

In NSW, they "discourage" you from limiting it to 200W. Although, the wording of the legislation seems to suggest to me that the onus is on police to prove that it was exceeding 200W when you were caught. As long as you were pedaling, I'd suggest that would be nigh impossible, as the police couldn't tell whether you were just fit, or on a lot of power.

i dont own a stealth, but as far as i can tell as long as you are pretending to pedal and not going too much over 40kmh no one really notices me any more than they would a normal bike..
put a 200watt sticker on it then it has to be only putting out 200watts of power right..
if you get pulled over, pretend to be puffed out a bit, then tell them..
"i can pedal my road bike at 40kmh, so why shouldnt i be able to ride this bike at 40kmh, its got bigger brakes, bigger tyres and suspension and im fully clothed, its gotta be much safer than me wearing tights"..
less weight means more fast

It will all depend on the individual cop,..if he has had a good day .. probably wont bother you,..
.. but if he is feeling like taking out some pent up frustration on someone, you could be riding your granny's rattler and he will do you for looking at him wrong. !!
You are best to play the stealth game, look inconspicuous, keep under the speed limits, keep in the bike lanes, etc etc.. try not to get noticed.
If you ride like a lunatic, or taunt them, they will find something to nail you for ! :?

Look like your obeying the law, ride on the road and wear some protective gear etc and cops really dont care, I regularly ride 40-50km/h past cops and the most i have had in terms of a responce is afew waves and a thumbs up from a guy with a speed gun :) I have to admit i do slow down a fraction when if i am riding beside them but all the cops i seem to have met have been pretty cool about the whole idea of a ebike. Seen plenty of normal riders pulled up for not wearing helmets and riding dangerously on shared footpaths etc so i think ebikes are a fairly safe bet in Gold coast atm.

FYI, i ride past 2 police stations, one on the way to work and a different one on the way home. So i pass alot of police :)
