So back in the early 90's I joined efnet & undernet IRC to just talk and BS with people like myself.
It's also where I started to learn about computers and the internet.

A lot of us spend quite a bit of time hanging on this board for good reason and it had me wondering
if there would be any interest in hanging on a IRC channel to get advice or just get to know people ?

I don't want to do anything to take away from the board and unless a good majority of people thought it
was a good idea it's not worth perusing.

Pretty much you use a IRC client http://www.mirc.com and join a server (Dalnet, Efnet, Undernet, etc.)
or even run our own server.

People join a channel and you just type whatever you want and when you hit enter everyone can read.

Little write up about what I am talking about.

Just a thought and maybe a bad one , but just thought id throw it out there.

I like it. I was just thinking this the other day!

Seems like there are a lot of questions that an online chat could help with.

I used to do this with my metal casting forum members....it was a good time & i made some life long friends.
set up a chat site & a meeting time & they will show up....

An online chat is about the only thing this forum is missing. Pretty much every popular online forum I've ever been a member of has a chat of some type. For the most part they are all pretty active.

I was involved in a forum once that only had 12 active members. We had chat night once a week and at least 4 would show up. My two cents would be, if this happens maybe pick a start time ( and dozens will show, guaranteed.) that is Internationally friendly.... Right now it's about 4am depending on where you are in America but its 9pm in Sydney, for example. But, absolutely fantastic idea.

Hmm, this might be pretty cool, though I spent enough (too much) time here anyway. It'd be nice if we had a module so I don't have to dig up my mIRC client and learn again how to use it.

Yea was just thinking out loud I still hang on IRC for another forum for a mmopg (eve online).

Setting times to me though retracts from what IRC is to myself. For the most part
I always am online and just ask questions as things arise or respond to on going
discussions.

Still wouldn't do anything without moderator blessing.

It would be nice if a Moderator took a look at this. This can be something we can do but it would be great to get their blessing.

Can't we just install a chatbox like vBulletin does?

IME with chats on forums, usually the forum does not want to deal with the liability of a live chat. On more "family" friendly sites they require constant moderation. The simple fix for this has been for someone on the site hosting the chat under their private domain as an "unofficial xyz forum chat". This also takes the burden of hosting/maintaining the chat away from our already taxed Admin.

Better yet just PM a moderator. I'm sure it's no problem to set this up with or without it being on the ES website.

I thought about it several times, i think it's a good idea, besides some things are better discussed in real time.

So it appears nothing came of this? I'm very surprised. Chat would be very useful.

I set up a channel on freenode, registered #endless-sphere, and left a bot in there to maintain it. I can't promise that my box will stay up though, so if anyone else wants to set up a bot and be an op send me a PM (I'm far from an IRC guru so feel free to jump in and help, i'll glaly +o you).

Edit: Pretty Quiet in there...

#endless-sphere is active on irc/freenode

Nix client

Don't know if it's going to get used but having a place to have real time discussions would be a HUGE addition to the community... especially for real-time troubleshooting.

Just idling around.... maybe we should set up a question/answer module for the bot.

I know it's better to bounce a question off someone in realtime. hopefully this type of thing gets used.
