Giai 60ah 3.6 v lithium cells

Well these have been sitting in our warehouse since 2005. So a bit neglected. Although Giai rep was through and said many/most of them should still be viable. I any case wondering if I should make a pack with them. I've started charging each cell individually and so far they all look good although a slow lprocess given their capacity.



Other then ending up with a pack a little on the heavy side, wondering what others would think about these.

hard to tell their size tho with nothing to compare nearby.

how much they weigh a cell and how do you connect them ?

Shelf life, cycle life, safety etc are all dependent on chemistry. So no assumptions can be made.
Except.. 7 year old cells are probably gonna be close to the after life, just on shelf life factors alone.

Wikipedia battery article is very outdated and wrong.

If i could edit it, what i would do is completely wipe out that page and make subpages devoted to various chemistries. Think they might object? lol. Even if my edit stood, i'd have to fight with hundreds of people to correct their stupid misconceptions that are allllllll over the net. Does not sound like fun to me. Not unless i have backup.

Pretty much everything is wrong with it. Look at all the 'citation needed' on the top right gray box, and all throughout the article.

Why would you take a cell format and say anything about it's cycle life, safety, energy density, power density, nominal voltage?

All these things are dictated by chemistry.

Is a 20AH A123 lipo 3.7v nominal, and last only 3 years?
Does a hobbyking lipo pack do >1000 cycles?

Even if they're a bit worn, and don't hold up much charge, they can still be used as capacitors, or range extenders, when placed in series and parallel with an existing battery.

The energy you get out of the batteries more than makes up for their extra weight (that is, if you don't need the space)!

Well, so far I've charged several of the cells. I picked the ones to start with which had the highest voltage. For now, I disassembled the cells front the 10 cell packs they were in to charge individually. Been charging the my lipo charger I use for my rc cars.. They seem to be taking the power well and taking forever to charge. Been charging them at around a 5-6 amp rate so figure an empty one would take many hours to charge. They are not heating up or anything at all so I suspect they are in good shape or as good a shape as you might expect for cells this age. They were made for pretty long term storage or other stand by uses I think. They rep seemed to think some would not perform but most would be useable after doing some checks when they were in.

Not sure on the weight though they are pretty heavy and assembled I a pack will also be heavy. Probably only have to charge once a week though.. Heheh..

Yes I marked them all with their initial voltage. Some were 3volts and others were just over 1 and some were less then 1. But none were near zero. Filling 2 at a time seeing I have 2 chargers takes time though. They all seem to be comming back. Taking in quite a bit of energy by the counter in my charger. They are not heating up or anything during charge but charging a 60 ah bat at 5amps takes hours of course.

I have 30 cells and they are mine now.

They still make them far as I know. Althought the biggest they list are 55 ah cells now..

Not sure how much they charge for them these days.

I'm afraid to ask.

Not sure what a gem is.. Right now Im running a Binox 250w with standard battery with a 2590 ultra life lion battery on top so some where around 26-28v + another 15 ish volts.. Have altered the codes on the can buss to enable more speed. I average 21-22 mph to and from work now. 13 miles one way.. With that..

Was hoping to put 1 or 2 of these sells in series to up the voltage just a bit more. 2 of the 2590 batteries put me at 60v fully charged which disabled the ehub.

So thinking I need to et around 48v max.

So far have charged u most of the cells. Still have some to go. Only have 2 chargers and doing each cell individually takes time when charging at 5amps each. They all seem to be holding voltage well once brought back up. Now I have a log of energy stored In a box.

You just picked up what once was 6.6kwh of batteries for free? Sweet! Not sure if these make sense for a non-cargo bike :/ even in series it's adding a lot of bulk and annoyance for a little of voltage.

Yes I agree about the weight. I have 30 cells though. 2or3 had some difficulty with the nut comming off which I still have to work on. But really think I'll just end up putting 1 in series with the main 26v and my 2590 15v battery which I already have in series with each other. Need just a few more volts with my 250 Binox system I
M now averaging 22 mph to and from work 12mile ride. Want to boost that just a bit more if I can..

Although I have to get a larger front sprocket now as my 28 mph max right now is a but uncomfortable cadence wise.

Don't know if they make bigger then a 44 tooth deore xt front though.
