If you are using gravity feeders you will get a vermin problem, roaches rats mice etc. I used to daily feed mine and pellets got stored in a sealed bin that way they would consume all their food, I once caught a mice in my bin and threw it to them and it got gobbled up in a flash, they love greens too

That's a fantastic coop build Marty, nicest job i've seen, that looks robust enough to last and function well.

Tonawanda Animal Control Officer was just at my door. No chickens in Town of Tonawanda. He said he will contact the Building department people. I thought we could have chickens? Buffalo is the big city here. All these towns and cities are outside of Buffalo. OK to have chickens in Buffalo.
Town of Amherst - Building Department Raising Chickens
City of North Tonawanda, NY Livestock - eCode360
Chickens are OK in Buffalo, Amherst, and North Tonawanda. From my house Buffalo and Amherst are a short walk away.

Here we go again. Building department violations. Letter, court, fines, jail. Been through this before with deteriorating houses.

Here I see someone trying to change the law. How to contact that JW Byrnes person? I am doing something wrong with FaceBook?

Here is link to TownofTonawanda Chickens Facebook website. Tried the message thing and sent a friend request. Also changed my avatar here and on Facebook to a painting of a chicken. I hate Facebook.

Did some detective work and found that JW Byrnes guys address. Mailed him a paper letter.

Can people go to a Town Board Meeting and ask for instructions on how to change a law?

Upload pictures. Click Submit. See notice "Your message contains too few characters." Reason is I type no text. So I copy [Your message contains too few characters.] I am better at copy and paste then typing.

No more visits from Tonawanda Animal Control Officer or Building Department People. Sent a email to the Building Inspector. As of today got no letters. Anti chicken government people are probably getting a swat team together to seize Marty's chickens. Got a relocation plan just in case. Grass backyard in top secret location. Location is in a low wet swampy area. Would quickly turn into mud.

Oh yes, if you upload a photo without any text but if you click "place inline" then that leaves the characters,

I can't believe your housing of the chickens is not allowed after you have done such a good job of containing them, they are such usefull and rewarding creatures that hardly make much sound (unless you have roosters), we have a 9 metre (29ft) from any dwelling law which is quite hard to achieve in the suburbs but if there is no complaints you are good, my neighbors once told me they make relaxing soothing sounds, I hope it works out well for you

This has happened twice. Chickens make a noise like HONK, HONK, HONK, HONK, HONK, HONK, HONK, HONK, HONK, HONK, HONK, HONK............ Sounds like ducks. First time I think it was because the neighbor's dog was looking at them from the other side of a chain link fence. Yesterday they honking again. Think it was because they knocked the chair off the table? Don't know how the chair got knocked off the table? HONK, HONK, noise might be some type of alarm in chicken language?

They have a special "egg song" they do about 5min after they lay an egg. Once they start singing it, they are determined to finish singing it, typically about a minute or two of making a racket.

You guys are making me miss our chickens a bit. Once their egg production fell off too much, combined with me having to do all the work, I went back to store bought eggs out of convenience. I do miss the occasional giant double yolker though along with the morning talk with the ladies.

I beg to differ, but probably because I shoveled more out of the farrowing shed. I have also heard that turkey is the worst, but I'd rather not find out.

some chickens are just loud jerks. Mine aren't to loud unless I sleep in then they make a racket outside my window til I wake up and feed them. The more chickens you have the louder the egg song, I think they are arguing about who laid the best egg.

Sadly, their chickens recently caught something and died. Vet said it was probably a disease spread from wild birds in the area. Very sad that they lost their beloved pets. :(

Marty's got eggs :D Getting 4 eggs every day. Wife has given most of them away to neighbors and friends. Made a record of the first eggs.
09/13/17
10 am 1 egg
4 pm 1 egg
09/13/17
8 pm 1 egg
09/15/17
10 am 1 egg
09/16/17
12 noon 1 egg
09/17/17
12 noon 1 egg
09/18/17
12 noon 1 egg
09/19/17
2 pm 1 egg
09/20/17
10 am 1 egg
09/21/17
2 pm 1 egg, 1 egg cracked
09/22/17
2 pm 1 egg
09/23/17
10 am 1 egg, 1 egg bloody

First eggs were smaller. Now they are getting bigger. Egg shells are brown. Taste to me is the same as eggs from the store. I was putting eggs in the cartons pointy side up because I thought they fit better that way. I was wrong. Eggs be stored pointed end down.
http://www.sciencefocus.com/qa/should-e ... d-end-down
Should eggs be stored pointed end down?
Yes. The blunt end of an egg has an air pocket between the inner and outer shell membranes. This gradually enlarges as the egg loses moisture during storage. Keeping the air pocket at the top helps to keep the yolk centred within the egg and prevents the air pocket from rupturing, which reduces the risk of the egg spoiling.
My wife picks weeds from the yard and feeds the chickens. They get real excited and jump up to eat the grass and weeds. She also lets them out to walk around. Chickens seem to like the grass and weeds that my wife feeds them better then the grass that they walk around in. Now I am trying to train my wife to eat grass and weeds so we can save money on salad.
