Best controller for MHM 602?

Hello,
I've been following these forums for along long time and am finally posting something.
So In the next few months I am getting a MHM 602. I will be running 72v worth of Thundersky 40ah batteries, I probaly will not ever go to higher voltage unless I come into serious money inwhich case I can upgrade my controller too. I would like advice on the controller I should use, It is between these:
KEB72601,200A,72V, BLDC Regen http://www.newkellycontroller.com/product_info.php?cPath=24&products_id=279
KBL72201,24-72V,200A,BLDC Regen http://www.newkellycontroller.com/product_info.php?cPath=23_46&products_id=262

I plan on going 30mph 96% of the time, The other 4% I need to go 45mph to pass or to get out of possible danger. I would like to get to 30mph as quick as possible without losing control of my bike or doing a wheelie, not that wheelies aren't cool or anything :twisted:

I had previously converted a Kawasaki GPZ 750 to electric using a Mars motor and a brushless sevcon controller running at 36v of walmart leadacid using a 6:1 ratio. The bike topped out at 25mph and got there faster then any 50cc scooter I ever rode.

I'm surprised no one has answered your question. Have you made a decision yet? I just typed this long response and then realized it was a year and a month ago that this was originally posted, not just one month. Hopefully my reply helps someone...

Personally, I've owned both the KBL72201 (200A peak, 100A continuous, $399) and the KEB72801X (350A Peak, 150A continuous, $449). On a motorcycle you'll never use the second 14-pin connector that the KBL offers. It's for CAN-Bus communication and things. The KBL series can hold its rated current for one minute, while the KEB can hold its rating for 30 seconds. However, with the KEB series you can afford more amps for less money. It depends if you need the amps just for acceleration which favors KEB or long inclines or hills which favors the KBL. Regardless, mount your controller to a 1/4 inch aluminum plate with thermal grease in-between to keep your controller cooler.-

I've only used the KBL72201 so far, and I've put about 900 miles on it. It's great when I'm riding by myself. The problem is that it only provides 200 amps to my Kelly direct-drive hub motor (17.5Kv high-speed version). With my wife and I on the bike (275 lbs combined) its acceleration is lacking. I think if my hub motor was wound for more torque, like like 10 to 12Kv then it wouldn't be an issue.

I'm currently wiring the KEB72801X onto my bike and manually balancing my 40Ah Thundersky cells in the process. I'll probably limit the motor-side current to 300A so I don't fry my motor which has a continuous rating of only 76A. Usually motors can handle 3X their rating for a short amount of time, so I'm pushing it.

Wow, Can't believe its been this long since I've been on the site. But to answer your 2 year old question, no. I never got a EnerTrac hub motor. I ended up using a generator from a Prius as a motor in a custom hub though, works outwardly just like the EnerTrac. I sold it to a friend and isn't in a bike yet and still needs to be laced to a wheel. I'd really like to do the same with a Prius Motor but I don't have access to machining equipment without paying for it at present. I also kind of frocked up the center hub on the motor I do have, Although the stator is fine.

Wow that's interesting about the prius motor being converted to a hub motor! have you more details or picture we would really like to see that :wink:

I will contact my friend Paul that has it and see when he has time for me to come take pictures. Although this has never been mounted the basic idea was that It would mount the stator to the swing arm solid,Then the hub for the wheel is made in two pieces and attached to the rotor in such a way that the rotor rotates in the inside of the stator like normal, but the hub you would lace a wheel to is attached to the rotor and rotates around the outside of the stator, The hub has to have roller bearings like the PSD on the Prius that go around the solid mounting points of the stator so the hub can rotate but allows the mounting point for swing arm to have a larger surface area for ease of mounting. Because the Prius generators rotor is suppose to have a shaft through it in normal use, you can use a motorcycle wheel axel to center the rotor in the stator and voila! I think that this is whats referred to as an outrunner motor, more then a traditional hub motor, even if they are similar. I hope that gets the general idea of what we did across in a duplicable way.
