If you're running 30amps only for a foot or two, 12ga would be appropriate with minimal drop in voltage. 14 would be stretching it, and 10ga would be ideal.. anything above that is kinda overkill.
I don't think the coating on the wires matters so much. What's inside does though.. copper is more conductive and won't fray.
