I think design of cafè racer is fantastic. Yamaha often teachs about design. Do you think it will be early on the market?

i will give Yamaha, KTM, Suzuki, etc one or two more years before we actually start to see electric motorbikes like this from the major manufacturers at the dealerships.. after all ktm announced the freeride electric in 2010 but is just now coming to market in Europe.. the Yamaha electric dirtbike looks very promising and this is some good news for me since zero & brammo seem to have left the dirtbike market segment (for now?)..

they are coming.. soon?? maybe haha

isn't the zero FX essentially a dirt bike?
why did zero get rid of the MX ?

the FX would make a good trail / dualsport bike & I would love to own one..
if I had $10k laying around I would already have one haha
but it is not a motocross/supercross bike, lacking suspension & chassis strength for big jumps, etc..

on the street & road race track zero & brammo have reached a level of performance parity w similar weight gas bikes.. also makes for a badass commuter or funbike..

offroad enduro, motocross, or supercross, zero now has sufficient power & decent range but lacks the chassis & suspension performance & durability of gas offroad racing bikes.. also due to gas light weight / high energy density compared to batteries, the zero is heavier than similar power / range gas bike..

without parity offroad there will be few sales.. without sales there is no need for marketing, production, or product development..

zero could further develop the MX chassis & add better long travel suspension.. but at what cost??? and will the consumer be willing to pay for it??? apparently not.. yet.

Yamaha & the major brands of course have massive resources to develop these bikes but they to will only follow the market..

I hope the best success for all in the industry but with more competition & choice the consumer / rider will benefit..
:)

I know! For a fleeting (senior) moment I thought I'd missed it when I read the engadget story lol.

Thanks, glad you like it!

I always love reading through the engadget comments on stuff like this:

Hardy 7 hours ago
Clearly they weren't thinking about insurance when they came up with the 200 lb motorcycle. Just imagine. Thief driving by one of these in a pickup. Lifts it up by hand and throws it in the back. Drives off.

Never thought of that.

I didn't notice on any of the other PR's about the bikes about the battery being swapable. That would be a pretty good feature, especially if the cost savings would benefit the consumer. Buy a better battery and they will add in an extra dirtbike. I find one of the huge advantages of electric EV's is the fact you can swap parts. I use a 48v pack on my mountain board, ebike, eskateboard, go-kart and motorcycle. I also switch my ESC out on the mountainboard, eboard, motorcycle and go-kart. You could even do that with motors if you were really hard up, but a bit too much hassle. You could never do any of that with ICE vehicles. I would never even attempt to build an ICE vehicle in the first place though.

I expected Honda would have been the first to drop.

BMW surprised me with their maxi-scooter..

..wonder if Rossi has ridden the big bike - and what he has to say about it..

they are watching the small guys to see if there is a market,
wonder how many zeros and brammos are sold this year....

.

supposedly maxi-scooters do very well in europe (kymco/honda/yamaha/suzuki/aprillia/gillera/piaagio)
so it makes sense for them to put out the gas ones.
and for 2014 the electric version.

i seen this yamaha scooter for the china market,
not sure if its just a re-labeled chinese scooter or something more..
http://beijingdaze.com/general/2010/08/03/e-bike-in-beijing-yamaha-metis-max/

and there is the honda ev-neo..

Nope. Yamaha design and manufacture their own line of electric scooters, solely for the Chinese market. I own one -- or rather, a slight variant of the above -- and have written about it in this forum before...

They're definitely considered the crème de la crème of e-bikes here in China in terms of design and engineering, and build quality. Certainly not the fastest (one of the reasons why I now use a different bike as my daily commuter) nor the best handling (low ground clearance). But built like a tank and completely problem free.

yeah, your thread was how i heard about the matis.

what bike are u using now?

found the yamaha china site,
http://www.yamaha-motor.com.cn/icats/products/detail_004.html

some more pics,

if its made only for the china market,
often that means lower quality compared to what they would sell in Japan,
guessing the scooter is manufactured in china.
possibly subcontracted to a chinese manufacturer.

I'm now riding on a bigger, more comfortable and much faster bike from eRider. The Yamaha was great, just not fast enough to accelerate out of sticky situations and didn't have the range I needed.

Yamaha do indeed subcontract out the manufacturing, from my research, to different manufacturers/assemblers. I had managed to find trace one once -- I had that info somewhere, a long, long time ago. I'm pretty sure the design and engineering is all in-house though. Chinese manufacturers mainly use off-the shelf components, whereas Yamahas have a lot of proprietary bits and pieces: controller, connectors, electrical wiring. Plus it's pretty clear from owning the bike, that plenty of thought had gone into the design of the bikes, which would be quite atypical if one merely contracted out the start-to-finish design-to-manufacturing process to any random Chinese factory (reason: see the last sentence of this post).

I couldn't tell you whether they're sub-par relative to anything they'd sell in Japan, but Yamaha China's domestic e-bikes are pretty well made.

There are PLENTY of Yamaha knockoffs running around though. Of those, 99% of them take the body of Yamaha's GAS scooters, do a copy, then plunk in batteries/a controller/motor instead of a fuel tank and an engine. So they're not quite the same as Yamaha's official line of electric scooters, aesthetically speaking. Lots of Honda Jog, Honda Ruckus and (probably the hot cake of 2014) Honda Air Blade electric clones too...

With the Yamaha/Honda e-scooter fakes, price is the sole consideration. We're talking, brand new bike, ready to ride, with 20Ah lead-acids thrown in, for U$400... You get what you pay for though...

Nice, did they happen to ever suggest a MSRP? That is the bigger question. Can we get one of these for something similar to ICE?
