SCP Runna converted to EV Runna

Postby evrunna » Sun Jul 19, 2009 7:10 am

Hi All i have been lurking this site for a while and have been inspired to build an EV Scooter/Moped for my wife. It started life as a SCP (Stoney Creek Performance) Runna 50 Scooter. I purchased it on Gumtree for $250.00AU it was running but had been stolen so had a few broken bits and the electric start didnt work but you could kick start it. So being inpatient and and not researching what i wanted to achieve i ordered my parts for the conversion from Kelly Controller and other suppliers. The parts ordered are
Kelly Order
1x 48V 2KW Hub Motor
1x KEB48221 Regen Controller Kit- Brushless 2.2KW Controller, Contactor Fuse, KEB Wiring Cable and Aluminum base.
1x Throttle 0-5V Hall
Misc Order
4x Matson 12V 4Amp Chargers
1x Meanwell 36V-72V to 12V-15V DC-DC Converter
4x CSB EVX12200 - 12v 20AH battery
4x CSB EVX1272 - 12V 7.2AH Battery - ordered after i completed the conversion as the range was a bit low with just 20AH.
1x 12v 4Ah - used for 12 volt bike wiring and switches connected to dc-dc converter for charging
Wiring, lugs, Voltmeter nuts and bolts
1x RD 250 swingarm modified to mount to scooter and Hub Motor. I had this modified to fit the scooter swingarm area and open the ends to fit the Hub motor.
The project took me about 5-6 Months on and off weekends mainly but some late nights. Once completed I was a bit disappointed with range so i purchased the 4x7.2ah batteries and created a center box (between the feet on the floor)to install them on the scooter. But with the extra batteries i was pleased the range is now 27KM which is good because it is 22KM return for my wife to go to work and back. The speed is 50KM which is fine and exactly what the ICE scooter speed was and all i could achieve for registration and insurance. I have registered the scooter with VicRoads in Melbourne Australia and it wasnt as bad as i thought it would be they were lets say EV savvy they had registered some EV scooters for Aust Post so it wasnt a session of explanations they knew exaclty what everything was.. PHEW i was nervous for no reason it went straight through no questions marks and an impressed VicRoads person on how the build came out.
I have attached some photos and let me say thanks to Endless Sphere bloggers for the inspiration and the helpful knowledge this site has been for me. Keep up the great knowledge and builds that keep blowing my mind on what people can achieve when they put there minds to it.

Congratulations. It looks awesome. I have been wondering how hard it would be to register an electric conversion. Would love to hear more details.

On a lighter note, what's up with the chock under the kick stand? And that mountain bike in the background looks like it could use a motor. :D

Thanks Adrian - With the regisitration i downloaded the Modified Production Vehicle documents from the VicRoads website they are NCOP14 & NCOP13 if you do a search for the docs at the web site i also think they have been updated because the guy at VicRoads was telling me they are updating the guidelines? I followed the section regarding battery storage, connections and wiring and weight consideration not to go over the weight limits of the frame. Also because it was previously a 49cc scooter i had to stay with the same speed limit of 50KM i could not exceed that limit for registration and roadworthy. I then had the scooter checked and roadworthy by a certified roadworthy mechanic and then booked the scooter in at VicRoads. The mechanic did a braking distance check and put the results on the roadworthy certificate and at VicRoads they basically checked VIN number and wiring was not exposed or dangerous ( they just checked my battery box and the cables were correct gauge that was it) and the rest was paper work proof of ownership and roadworthy certificate. I hope that helps.

Re the Stand i just put that there to have the scooter more upright for the photo.. and the bike is my friends but if he doesn't pick it up soon i will do a conversion and then tell him and use it

WOW that's amazing. Congratulations! its really a good conversion. and for $250 you got a major bargain! I'm very impressed indeed.

It seems like we're starting to get quite a few e-vechicles in Melbourne :)

What is the performance of the motor like in comparison to the old ICE?
also
what battery chemistry did you choose for your conversion? edit: from the picture, i can see 17ah jump start SLA packs. thats fairly sweet :) good work! (the SLA's wont last that long though.)

can i ask what the conversion cost was?
Bike / Motor: Electric specalized rock hopper with Crystalyte 504 / 26"
Batt: Yesa 72v (36v*2) (getting 6.7ah) LiFEPO4 in a Topeak bag. OR 1x eMTB 48v 20ah pack (straps to frame) -depending on range requirements.
Controller: Unmodified 48a digital with 4110 Fets
Current Prob: Bike is in parts getting painted / drying / testing replacement BMS
Trail of Dead Parts:Avanti Frame, 408 motor *melted*, 35a controller - i broke by trying to mod it 2nd controller - blew it up.

Thanks BigH, With performance compared to the ICE its has a much better take off and reach top speed 50Km much quicker than the ICE in about 10 -12 sec but i would have to say the engine was abused and seemed running rough when i purchased it and i did not use it much i stripped within a week i had it home.
The batteries not the one in the picture are 20AH AGM deep cycle batteries from CSB the model being EVX the spec sheet outline they are used in EV type projects. I would like to go Lipo once the EVX life are over CSB state a 800 cycle life i would more likely think 300-400 as a more realistic figure and hope the Lipo price will drop. Cost wise for the build i would say approx about $1200 i still have cable nuts bolts lugs and extra paint left over.

Thanks for that. I couldn't find the docs on VicRoads but found the 2006 version here : http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/vsb_ncop.aspx

Found forums discussing the updates, but couldn't find the official version. Oh well. I just want to get an idea of what is involved so this is enough for me now. Cheers.
