I've heard of "URL squatting" in the early days of the web. I recall the story of a guy who registered mcdonalds.com a few weeks before the actual McDonalds fast food organization thought that this new "internet" thing might have some lasting value. They found out their most desired name was already taken, and threatened legal action (to no avail).

They finally came to an agreement where McDs used some of their tax-deduction charity money to buy computers and Wire-up a poor school near him for the internet (that time, it was a good guy commiting "arm twisting"). Others have not been so charitable, and clearly were opportunistic schemers.

As a side note, a large global oil company wanted a new name to cover all its partners, and created the name "Exxon" because it was so different from any other word or name that was known. I think thats a wise strategy for any new business. Do an extensive name search of your favorite choices, and lock in an unusual web-domain name at the same time as when you start the business.
