A research team from the University of Wollongong has declared what it says is a major breakthrough in boosting the potential range of EV batteries.

Team leader Professor Zaiping Guo from the university’s Institute for Superconducting & Electronic Materials told her audience at UoW’s recent Big Ideas Festival that cells using nanostructured Germanium (Ge)-based anode material improve energy density by up to five times, sufficient to at least double the range of the batteries used in today’s EVs.

Testing with lithium-germanium anode chemistry have shown consistently high capacity at low and high discharge rates – up to 1860mAh/g (milli-Amp hours per gram), compared to 300 and 400 mAh/g for conventional graphite based anodes). This makes it suitable for all manner of uses, from phones and other small mobile devices to EVs and industrial-scale energy storage. The technology can also dramatically reduce charging times.

The university says it’s working with South Australian-based electronics specialist Redarc and Shanghai-based battery maker DLG to ready the technology for market. “We’re truly excited about this breakthrough and are looking forward to transitioning this technology to the commercial marketplace,” Professor Guo said in a statement released by the university.

The major barrier to entry at the moment is cost, she told media at the festival. “The price of producing the batteries is very high. But the Germanium-based materials we use are quite abundant in the earth’s crust. They’re very simple to synthesise and cost-effective. They can be fabricated in large-scale by industry, and therefore have great commercial potential.”

Hmmm I guess it's a high impedense battery again.. that can only be draw at this capacity at 0.1C :roll:

But i like these new battery discover that finally never happen ...

Well i might be too pessimistic, but i just hope that one day someone will post one of these news and that it will finally be in production 2-3 years later...

You aren't too pessimistic at all, in my opinion. Some part of me thinks there is a conspiracy to slow the growth of technologies to a slower, more manageable (and profitable) rate. But aside from that notion, I totally agree that for a long time there have been many incredible claims (probably extremely exaggerated or misunderstood by those writing or talking about it) that never come to be. These consistent let downs make it hard to be optimistic or enthusiastic about anything on anything further away than a (at least) working and tested prototype in your hands.

The bottom line, sometimes hearing about amazing and innovating things can be frustrating to a point where you might want to say, don't tell me about it until you have a buy button on some website, frock the hype.

It says high and low discharge rates.
I won't read into it things that aren't there, but can imagine if they've had success in a wider range of discharge types then it's a good sign.

As for positivity, if keeping too close an ear to the ground it sounds like you're getting the excitement of watching grass grow.

I personally have a positive perspective, of looking back on "today" in 30 years when my kids are at this age to tell the equivalent to running 3 big car batteries of, their shift forward in size for the future will be lighter, more range, more versatile power control within legal limits for more terrain... integrated with dynamo hub features for similar size and all weather conditions, and more importantly wider population usage for better separated cars from bicycles from pedestrians space to operate.

Indeed it's hard to get excited about any of these laboratory test result articles anymore. We never hear follow up reports about EV applicable upscale product commercialization coming from them that is available to anyone other than OEM's in mass scale. At most its just higher energy density, low C-rate, small capacity cells applicable to Laptops and smartphones.

laughably, Liveforphysics has been heralding A123 Nanophosphate technology as 'dead' for several years now due to being outclassed by new emerging cell technologies like NMC. However apart from EIG NMC cells that will cost over $1.34/Wh in small quantities (excluding delivery), A123 prismatic's have been the only High reliability/High AH per cell/High C-rate/High energy density/High cycle life cell available to pack users users at an acceptable price ......and soon we wont even be able to get those due to the company's bankruptcy and factory closures! WTF is wrong with the battery industry!

I have seen somewhere that these Germanium based anode chemistry really are as good as they say, but they also have quite high self-discharge rate and short lifetime (calendar time and/or cycles). I don't see such a battery in a phone tbh. Silicon anode have the same disadvantage and also around 2k Ah/kg, maybe they found that Ge is better than Si?
