Looking for an ESC

Postby Thecaptain115 » Sat Jun 16, 2012 4:04 pm

Starting to piece together a build, and want to buy all my components separately. I'm trying to find an ESC that is 12S LiPo compatible, and has a low voltage cutoff that is user selectable (either at the factory, or adjustable.) I'd like to have a cutoff of 3.5V/Cell, or 42V. I'm having a hard time finding anyone that sells an ESC with a LVC. Not sure what motor I'll be running yet, but am going to a 40A current limit.

Welcome to the forum. The best way tyo handle the LVC is with A Cycle Analyst. It plugs into the compatable controller and lets you set your LVC, along with Speed, and Amps.

There are several controllers in various forms from various manufacturers that are compatable with the CA. But recomending one would be premature untill you have selcted a motor.
Buy the ticket, take the ride.

Nice, guess I'll have to buy one of these too! It would make the most sense to use a speed controller that accepts the direct plug in version. They sell Infineon and crystalyte. Either of those any good? Im really trying to buy once, and spend a little more now inStead of replacing later.

Having said that, I'm going to be going with a 26" geared rear drive setup. Trying to find a company that uses high quality gears, and also offer replacement gears.

Thanks for your opinions!

It sounds like you want to use an RC ESC to power a geared hub motor? Jeremy Harris posted a while back on the specific electronics involved (I didn't understand it, but I trust him). But...E-bike controllers were not appropriate for RC motors, and ESCs are not appropriate for hubs. I have a Castle Creations and Hobbywing ESCs, I set them a couple years ago and haven't changed them since, but I'm pretty sure they have an LVC that is settable.

My first ESC was a very inexpensive generic unit that did not have an LVC and I fried one of the LiPo packs when I noticed it sagging from an extra low discharge.

I dont want to use an RC ESC as I dont want to have to deal with the throttle signal. I'm currently leaning towards the Infineon line of controllers, as they are directly compatible with the Cycle Analyst. Can anyone recommend a geared rear motor/wheel combo that works well with the Infineons? If not geared, what about direct drive?
