Cheap Voltmeter?

Postby kudos » Wed Jul 04, 2012 6:37 am

My friend has just got up and running with a Mac motor from Paul at emissions-free, using 12S LiPo.

He doesn't want to fork out for a Cycle Analyst, but obviously does need to monitor his voltage.

He's got balance lead devices already, but the batts are located behind his saddle so he needs something that can dispaly on his handlebars.

Is there a cheap voltmeter which is easy to rig up to this setup?

Cheers,
Kudos

Hmm, thanks Henk but this display requires it's own separate power supply.

Not sure how that would work...

3 AA batteries in series? You wanted "cheap", remember...

That will work that way, but keep hunting. Thanks to a link from others, I just bought two voltmeters that run on just two wires, for 15 bucks for both. I'll look for a current sale on it from the same seller in a minuite here.

The other cheep option is the harbor freight or other multimeter. Often on sale for 5 bucks at HF, I actually just got one for free when I bought a pack of zip ties.

Can't get cheeper than that. Cut the leads, and splice into the controller input wires.

I got the same ones as Dogman. Perfect for the job. No external power supply needed and supposedly waterproof. I haven't soaked mine yet, so I can't confirm the waterproof bit.

Got one wet last night, not real bad, but rained on some. Kept on working fine. The backside was kept dry with some tape I had wrapped around it.

If he's using a 48V controller most have LVC set to 42V which is about a perfect cutoff for 12s lipo at 3,5V per cell. It will protect from over discharge, but if you want to see remaining voltage, this one works great. Hook up to controller side so it goes off with controller.

been using one of my HF meters on the same set of batteries since 2007. The other since March this year.

Hmm. These will unbalance your cells with continuous use. Therefore, I prefer to use my Cellogs only momentarily to get a detailed snapshot of my cells.

Cheap enough?

I use one of there, just use a 9v pp3 battery to power it and you're good to go. :)
