Finally looking at this thread again, I guess you'd have to say something like, " for such and such speed, distance, and grade,,, what is better, planetary geared hubmotors or direct drive.

Which is best just depends on your needs. My needs on the street, crazy hot climate, hills up to 10% grades up to 10 miles long, speeds up to 30 mph, I'm for dd all the way.

But I'd love to see a planetary gearmotor with the diameter of a 9c hub. That would have insaneo torque for the dirt, and a bigger cover to radiate heat. I'm afraid of melting down a Mac dirt riding. I could try one in winter, but in winter I just run double the watts in my dd motor.
THE LIPO RULES. NEVER ABOVE 4.3V NEVER BELOW 2.7V DON'T PUNCTURE

Ideal charging /discharging range for Lipo, 3.65v minimum 4.1v maximum

See battery technology section, FAQ thread at the top of the page for lipo noob info.

There are so many variables here it is like asking which colour is better, red or blue. It depends on the quality of each design, the quality of materials used and of course the rating criteria and associated weighting.

Given reasonable designs of each I would say you can hang you hat on the obvious major distinguishing characteristics - the geared will be lighter and the mass of the direct will give it the advantage for handling higher steady state and transient power levels.
