te="kfong"]I went to the Detroit maker faire this year, it's well worth going to. It would be a worthy destination. One person brought his electric motorcycle to show off. There were a bunch of DIY bikes that had a line of people trying them out. Electric bikes need to be represented, but I don't know if it would be safe to allow them to be ridden in such a crowd. Just too many people walking around. You can still show them off yourself and there is a small cart track you can ride them on. Too many turns to be able to race them, track is setup for power wheels racing. I plan to attend next year as well since my nieces had such a fun time and want to attend both days due to all the crafts. It's a great event for kids, but I enjoyed talking to the builders and seeing what cool stuff people can make.[/quote]

I'd request/recommend maybe choose places that are both maker faire locations and "bike friendly" cities, with of course the definition of Bike (bicycle) Friendly up for debate.

For example, DC, Minneapolis, Boston, and NYC (next spring) all have bike share and have made great strides to push cycling as an alternative to the American automobile-exclusive transport society. I'd rather spend my hotel and restaurant dollar at a place that respects bikes than a place that is clueless.
1st build: Dahon Jetstream folding bike. Quick, reliable, capable of 30mph. Light enough to lift, folds for easy transport by car/bus/train.
2nd build: RC powered 2009 Norco A-Line. Top speed 31mph. Built like a tank, it's resistant to Boston potholes, can stop on a dime, easily goes up/down curbs when necessary.
3rd build (just started): Scratch build ultimate utility bike. Based on a common power module using a NuVinci left side freewheel.

The lakeshore bike path is almost always busy.

Closed tonight due to high winds and hugh waves.

I love the lake front, but it's always busy. Just about impossible on holidays and weekends.

Chicago meet? That would be nice.
Chicago loves Bikes!

You guys have the timing all wrong. In the dead of winter when most of you are jonesing from not riding or tired of freezing your butt off when you do ride, and our buddies down under are wanting to escape the heat, then you all hop on planes and come to ebike paradise. Bringing bikes would be a pain, so I'd be sure to have plenty to ride. You haven't lived until you've ridden on a hard packed sand beach at low tide. For the competitors there's a full race facility with cart, car, bike, and drag tracks that's close enough to my house to just ride the bikes there, and $4 gets you run of the place daily in the sunrise to 11am practice session.

A word of warning though, with any sizable group I can pretty much guarantee that some of you will only go back for long enough to pack your shit and move down permanently.

How about Colorado,

Say at the base of Pikes Peak, Manatue Springs to be exact...

I recommend Lone Duck camp grounds, for a bon fire, place to meet and greet. And, the big boys can go and climb the Mountain too!
End of august area, Assault the peak, the E bike event of the year....Be there

I plan on going to pikes peak next year as long as it doesn't interfere w my regular race schedule. So far they have only secured half the dates for next years schedule so its still up in the air for me. But as long as it isn't the exact same weekend as one of my races I'll be there.

Are two "international" events one too many?
Pikes is cool, but maybe a bit extreme for mass participation.

It's not too early to consider coat-tailing on AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days in Ohio... they had electrics there this year (2011), right?
    Central location
    Spring weather
    Track & amenities
    Camping / RV
    Large event to attract sponsors
    BIG swap meet

?

Luke, Paul (and other e-moto insiders) - is this already on your schedules?
Have a Nice Day,

I love the idea of everyone getting together. I would try my hardest to come.

I'd like to offer an idea: I think it would be very difficult to get everyone in one place, so perhaps we could have 4 sites--East Coast, West Coast, UK and Australia. If we designated a person to video each location, we could make a documentary of sorts with all our members.

Also, we need to get some RSVPs, so we have an idea of who's going to come.

I'm pretty sure that you can count me in. :)

This is in my backyard. I only missed it this year because of a business trip that went a day longer than expected. This would allow us all to meet Craig Vetter who I continue to think would be very interested in our electric developments. Read up on Craig here: http://craigvetter.com/

I would think that parasiting a few "ES Meets" onto other events would be the way to go. The several Races, related tradeshows, etc. Have a meeting, booth, room, dinner, tailgate, etc as appropriate. Maybe some banners, a handout? Business cards? Bumperstickers? TShirts? Did I see a banner at the Grange race?

Anyway, do it several times, whenever a few ES folks can get there to cover it. Several good ones have been mentioned already. Pike's peak, California and Arizona races, AMA Vintage Electric Motorcycle days?

Last year Craig held a 100 (or 50 not sure) ride through the local country side in his mileage challenge. IIRC one of our members participated in it. Craig welcomed electrics to the event, and his mileage challenge. He may even have had a trophy for it. Craig is semi retired and I think approachable. If we are getting something organized, ES should contact him and see if we can get a special category in his events. He is a good guy, interested in high milers, and has an open mind... I think. I'll look for the link, and who rode on the countryside tour.

Edit: found the thread: http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=29652
Nuts&Volts rode in the challenge, this is his narrative:
Very good day of riding for the electric bikes. The gas bikes did well too, the mpg winner was at ~156mpg on an nx250 with a big front bubble fairing.

Anyways 3 electric bikes showed up and raced. Current Motors (http://www.pluginamerica.org/vehicles/c ... es-scooter) co-founder brought one of their rides. I brought my electric katana (110 EIG cells, agni 95R, & Alltrax 7245) and Kraig Schultz (http://www.schultzengineering.us/) brought his delta-11. As electrics we made the decision to ride at the 55mph pace for only the first 36miles and then recharge and turn around. All three of us accomplished this without slowing anyone down. Well the Current Motors had some powerloss because the motor overheated some, they are working on things to improve this. The awesome thing is that the rest of their software and everything works flawlessly, i was highly impressed.

We travelled on 55mph roads and rode at about the speed. I stayed tucked behind my small windscreen the whole time to minimize losses. According to my CA I averaged 48mph over those 37 miles and peaked at 62mph downhill. I used 3.066kWh over 35 miles (reset the CA 2 miles in) and got 88.1 wh/mile. I think i pulled 180A max out of my 100Ah pack. We stopped and cahrged, but I only got 5Ah back into my pack. On the way pack we took a slower pace at an average of 30.1mph and I was able to get 75.5wh/mile or 2.5 kWh over ~35 miles (still tucked). Overall I used about 70Ah out of 100Ah and my cells are still sitting at 80.1V (3.64V/cell on EIG cells). It felt great to get some great performance numbers.

Next year I will be traveling the whole 100miles and having the best mpg (well MPGe). I can probably do 90wh/mile so i need about 1.6kWh or ~20Ah more at 90%DOD to do 100 miles. Planning on getting a narrower chassis and some sort front dustbin. Screw the groceries! haha
