Free single stage drive "Contest"

Postby recumpence » Thu Aug 27, 2009 8:10 am

Hey Guys,

I am offering a free single stage drive unit (no motor included) to be donated to an ES member who has a cool build happening or very soon to happen.

Here's the deal;

I am looking for people to post a current build, or a build that may not be under way, but will be under way by the end of the contest.

Here are my requirements and here is how it will work;

#1 The perspective builder must be capable of completing the required build, justifying the new drive.
#2 The builder must be technically savy enough to either already understand RC builds, or is a quick learner. This is so the builder does not get frustrated with the build and/or spend money building something that does not fit them. We are all here to help out, of course.
#3 This must be a build for themselves, not for a paying customer. I want this build to remain here in the Sphere where we can see its progress and how well it runs when finished.
#4 The build for this bike (once the winner is decided) must be hosted here so we can see how the build progresses.
#5 The build should begin within 30 days of recieving the drive from me to keep interest in this project alive.

Those are my requirements. Now, here is how I think we should go about choosing the best build;

Perspective builders should post here on this thread (not to me in a PM), their planned build. Any pics and/or CAD drawings, or napkin drawings are acceptable. Be as detailed as possible. Market yourself and your build. Tell us why yours is best. Be creative!

Submissions will be accepted for 14 days from today. After that, a winner will be chosen.

The winner will not be chosen by me, but by ES members. Once the submissions are closed, ES members will vote on who they think has the best build. I may offer my suggestions on various build ideas, but I will not vote. I want this to be a ES thing, not a Matt thing. :D

The purpose of this giveaway is to jump-start otherwise stagnant builds that I know must be lurking here on the Sphere, as well as to see more creative ideas come along. Many creative builds have already been happening. I hope this will encourage even more.

Lastly, the drive will have a blank motor plate. I need to know the motor type (we can all give suggestions on motors for those who are undecided on motor style) so I can machine the face plate to match the motor.

That is it!

So, let's see your build ideas and perspecitve plans! :mrgreen:

Matt

P.S. Mods, if this thread is somehow innapropriate, let me know and we can move or delete it...........

I'm new enough that I don't know what your drive looks like, but here long enough that I'm sure you have a thread for it somewhere. Is part of the contest finding it ;) or can you link it here?

My "builds" are kind of different from most. :) So I need to know what exactly the drive does and where it is intended to go before I could design something around it, or see if it would fit on one of my already-dreamed-up crazy bikes.

I do also have one regular bike I keep around for use when the main one is undergoing changes/fixes: a 2005 Columbia 26" Comfort Bike, but I don't have any batteries that would fit on it properly these days (3x SLA 12V 17Ah are the smallest I've got that are useful and they're way too heavy for that bike).

Since everything else on my bikes is recycled from junk that used to do other things, it'd be strange (but nice) to have something new and purpose-made for it. :) So I'm up for entering, once I know more about what I'd need to do.

Matt, is this the model you're speaking of now? If not I'll delete post to keep thread uncluttered. Also if you post a pic in the first thread to clarify I will delete/unclutter. As a reference, the RC motor is the same size as my coffee cup. Also the two drive halves rotate to allow various mounting positions.

Hey, sounds like fun. I’ve been meaning to do an RC ebike project, but didn’t want to design my own gearing. Another reason for the hold is the use of sensorless escs. This to me is really not the way to go. Once Astro Flight gets a sensored motor for the ebike community, then I think it will be a viable solution. If I was to go this route, I would use one of the cheaper RC motors from united hobbies or such and put in hall effect sensors. I don’t think it being possible with the Astro motors without some redesign. I have a tidal force frame I can start this project on. The tubing is quite wide, but I have my own CNC machine and will be doing my own anodizing as well and can post progress of the build and cad work. I’ve been working on my own battery mounts that should be interesting. It uses the water bottle mounts and some cnc clamps. The battery gets removed so I can put in another pack for another run through the trails. The pack is wrapped in carbon fiber and will be very sturdy. Not as serviceable, but with the electronics enclosed as well, it should be reliable. I would end up mounting the drive unit in front of the triangle and the batteries in the triangle to keep the weight more centered. Another option is to put in a smaller rear wheel and put the drive system in the back. This would be more for trail riding, which is what I enjoy most. I also have a full suspension motobecane bike that can be used. It currently is destined for a BMC 600w motor, but only because I have not come up with a worthy enough RC drive system to install.

This is the bike I had been planning a RC build for. In fact I bought it specifiacally for that reason. I picked it up on Craigslist for $450. Best I can figure (according to previous owner) it was $1200 New. However, I like the bike so much as is that I think I am going to (started looking at CL already) find a similar bike,(higher end front suspension, large disc brakes, quality components) except a hard tail. I live in Orlando, so shouldn't be too hard to find one.

I am in process right now with Astro-Bob for a motor. It is a dual purpose motor, as I am building an electrathon also (damn I have to many irons in the fire). Right now it is looking like a 8150 5 turn with all 6 wires (195/113 KV) and maybe a hall sensor..if I can get him moving on the sensors, hoping that dangling cash would be the trick. I have a castle 110 and also 2 turnigy 100 A.

My plan was to go with the 8 speed alfine and a large rear gear ala Gary's 3 speed, so I could have 8 gears for both motor and peddles. I do like to peddle. With your drive I could go to a smaller rear gear and be a bit more stealthy.

Batteries, I am planning on at least 10S2P of the Turnigy and maybe as much as 12S3P. By getting rid of the rear suspension it opens up a lot of space in the triangle, again for the stealthyness.

I have been flying RC for about 15 years. I switched over to all electric in about 2001. I haven't been flying as much lately do to my increased interest in electric transportation. I competed in RC Combat and was one of the first to do so with gas vs electric. A few years ago I ranked in the top 10 in the nation in Open B class, with only a few other electrics in this class. I wound my own motors using a kit from Scorpian motors. I have a converted speed controller, but would probably want a converter either from Fetcher or evlogix.

As for capability take a look at my motorcycle in my signature, I have also done a mongoose dual suspension (Cheap target bike) with a Currie brushless geared motor running on a Castle 100 HV. I also have a sting ray chopper I just picked up off CL for $150. It needs new batts, but I have been running it on my mongoose 12S3P A123 pack and it does quite well.

My plan for this bike is to be a Bad-Ass mountain bike. Capable of any trail with or without peddling, and still be a good commuter bike.

World Record attempt bike as contest entry

Postby John in CR » Thu Aug 27, 2009 10:52 am

{edit} Entry withdrawn. Give it to someone in need of something free, or for a build involving kids.

I'm not going to put in an entry. There are many worthy projects out there, but I would vote for one that makes use of multiple gear ratios, either through the bicycle drive train or other method. A durable solution would tie everything together.

My build will absolutely require durability and multi-gearing for good efficiency on both flats and climbs. I'm about to start testing a Nexus 3, but I don't know if that will be enough gearing range at less than 2:1. If not then the most likely is a front derailleur type changer at the drive sprocket, and normal derailleur to move the chain at the rear, and switch both in unison for a dead straight chain for best efficiency and durability. That may only be 3 gears, but a wide range for them. Other options still open are retro-direct, or something involving an overrunning clutch similar to the EVO system, but good clutch. In any event, I'd want to run a low Kv motor and get Matt's 1st stage drive to gear down fairly close to wheel speed. Everything is wide open and subject to group input.

Oooh. I was just thinking about this!

This proposed project would use the Recumpence drive unit on a fully suspended custom built recumbent bike, along with a high power battery pack. Target speed 40MPH. This bike has heavy duty wheels and because the rear subframe is from a Mongoose electric bike, it already has a freewheeling left hand drive sprocket and a convenient place to mount the motor. This bike will be used for daily commuter use, and needs to be able to accelerate quickly from stop signs, lights, and muggers.

Cool another interesting bike to maybe copy portions of someday. Warren, may I ask how it handles (especially during hard braking) with that more forward than typical weight distribution resulting from the swingarm addition in the back.

Hey Warren,

You gotta come by and ride (drive?) my 18hp trike.

It is really something to hit 50mph in less than 5 seconds on a 90 pounds machine. :mrgreen:

I will give you a shout tomorrow.

Hi Matt,

I'd require much more detailed plans than I've seen so far.

Also since mounting was big bump in the road I'd require a detailed explanation of how they plan to mount the drive.

Are you going to include a set of the clamp mounts or sell a pair for $300 to go with the "free drive"? :lol:
Best Wishes!

Mitch

I'm gonna have to throw in a vote for Warren.

If you have spent a significant amount of time on recumbents.com, you know
how much work went into documenting all that stuff,
therefore, this build would be well documented.

He hosts Matt's recumbent ebike build.

It looks like there is a ton of room in the rear suspension triangle.

Warren, got any photos of that left side freewheel?
