I'm still trying to understand the size of this rim. Is it a 16" rim when mounted with a tire makes a 20" wheel? If so, I'm probably going to get a couple. Edt: oh I see you offer both. Do you have any 16s left? Are the black? How much?

I am out of 16 inch rims.

Bicycle rims are sized based on the OD of the tire they hold, whereas motorcycle rims are sized at the rim. So, a 20 inch bicycle rim will hold a 16 inch motorcycle tire.

So I take it a 20" bike rim will fit a moped that takes 16" moped rims

As far as I understand it.

Johnrobholmes is the best person to answer that, but I believe that is the case. These rims are about 16.5 inches at the top of the rim wall.

I know from personal experience that Pirelli 2 &1/2" x 16" tires fit just fine

Would I be better to buy moped designated rims for a lightweight sport moped with a cromotor? Or these will be fine with some 13/14 spokes?

Sadly I never got to ride with that setup. I used 13/14 spokes, and the wheel felt solid as a rock, but in the end the wheel was too small and I had to upgrade. Personally I would definitely ride on such a setup if my bike geometry would handle it. The wheel was not too heavy, was suitable for flat fixing without tire irons, but was beefy for long life/good wear. You don't need a terribly bulletproof rim if the tires can take the punishment of the potholes.

Just curious what tire would be ideal at this width? I have these Pirellis that I think would be great, I'm not sure it will fit my current bike though.

Schwalbe Big Apple 20x2.35, Animal GLH 20x2.25, or 3G Bikes Twenty-G (designated 20x3.45 but really more like 20x2.75) would all be fine choices. I'd stay away from tires under 2" nominal, but anything 1.75" wide or wider would work fine from a technical standpoint.

you can get heavy ones from Pro Wheel, they have a decent selection although 36 hole is hard to get. Otherwise you have to order rims from Japan as they have a lot of light motorcycles there.

I found a suitable 36h rear 18"x2.15" rim here: http://www.mikesxs.net/products-56.html

Now the question is which tires...

For anyone looking for something a bit more heavy duty or in larger size can look at above link.. Not trying to divert sales.

That is the question, isn't it?

I'm curious why you chose 18" instead of the more common 17" and 19" or the more lightweight and size-appropriate 21"?

I have considered 2.75-21 and 3.00-21 tires before (though improvements in the size range of available bicycle tires have turned me away from that approach), but having had a motorcycle with an 18" wheel before, I just can't reckon what's the appeal.

As I recall, Dunlop K591 tires were sticky, widely available in less-common or archaic sizes, and seemed to work great unless you had lots of power (in which case they wore out too quickly). They're really old news now, but I'm sure they are still available.

18" is the original rim size on this bike. I'll probably do 17 for gearing it down. Check out my thread for more on that topic. I may add that I am trying to stay under 23.5" finished diameter
