Looks to me like you "bottomed out" on where the swing frame hit the flat piece that the swivel part is welded to, in effect, twisting the weld to the point of failure. Look in the center of that flat piece, and see the paint chip missing. It is stuck to the weld on the swing arm, where the 2 pieces meet.
OR, my eyes are deceiving me ???  Is that Aluminum ??

yes the frame is alum, and very soft alum... welding it back is out, i don't have the equipment needed.

I will probably build a custom steel swingarm, time permiting :(

video of the fail, plus some good riding !

I don't know if you should buy one... I examined the broken weld, and it seems that the welding did not penetrate enough, making the weld weaker than it should have been. Bottom line : those frame are beautiful, quite lightweight and dirt cheap. The videos I made attest the kind of riding I did with it, and it does not seems extreme at all to me. It depends on the kind of riding you do I guess, but for a street racer, frame strength should not cause issues...

Surely you have a welding shop close by. I bet they'd weld that up for you for $20 or even free maybe!

I was trying to get one of Farfle's steel swingarms but I couldn't wait any longer (MIA) so I decided to make my own out of alu. At first I didn't think I could do it and admittedly was a bit scared of the unknown. But I got some alu, cut it up, took it to my closest weld shop and asked if they could weld it up. They took it from me and said no problem and told me it would be $65-$85, so now I'm like "that was easy!" (it should be done today or tomorrow ;) )

BTW: NICE! You know your first build was an inspiration for me. 8)

Actually the new swingarm is 50% done ATM ;) It's steel but should be ok weigthwise and quite rigid. Some say i'm hyperactive :D

Well I wouldn't do things you do on your bike :P Just street riding probably. But I'd have to buy all parts for the frame apart and I think it would be cheaper to just buy a complete bike. Thought that frame is beautiful :D

That setup, as portrayed in that video, is just amazing. The torque on demand looks very controllable.

Yeah, control is amazing, nothing like my previous bike!
Sure, this hub is heavier than a RC equivalent motor, but controllers are available and well documented, and the greater inertia makes riding it more like an ICE.

What do you think about my new swing-arm? It is a work in progress, but I like how it looks on the bike. It is made from 35x25x1,5mm mild steel, so I fear that it won't be strong enough on the under side of the bend... I may weld a plate to put more meat there.

Looks great!

How would a q100 geared motor work for middrive? Say at 48v.. 20ah?

I have no experience with cute motors, aren't they rated 500w max? I have no idea if they would handle 1200w for long, But if they do, they would be a serious option! The only drawback is that they probably have an aluminum freewheel thread, that may make securing the drive sprocket more complicated, but then they have the advantage to freewheel internally!

I would just put a simple plate over the weld on the sides of each miter for the bend and it should be fine. Mild steel is plenty strong, it just likes to bend, so you need to make sure its stiff enough. Plate it over after welding and then welds the plate totally and you should be fine I would think. You don't mess around do you?!! I wish I had your free time! LOL!

On second thought, why not run a simple gusset from the shock mount down to the axle area? That would guarantee its strong enough. a simple 3/4" square tube would suffice...

Do you have a link to the frame? I really like the looks and it seems decent geometry. I might like to get one simply to copy everything easily for my design I am working on. I am hoping to offer complete turn key bikes within the year using my Trail Drive setup integrated into the frame with a battery box like Timme's

Speaking of free time... I work 35hour a week for my internship, plus schoolwork, with almost no holydays! But... I never watch tv, and I try not to waste time on the internet ;)

LOL, sounds like my schedule, but replace school with work, and then add in Momma and Baby time, pretty much leaves NADA. LOL! I Create time on a regular basis, I could likely win the Nobel Prize for mastering Space/Time... :-)

I linked the ebay add were I got the frame just on last page Whip! but as you are in the us, i would recommend getting one of those instead :

Image

they are not that expensive on ebay... http://cgi.ebay.fr/MOUNTAIN-CYCLE-BATTE ... 4cffa5e153

more expensive, but those are real slopestyle frame with 5" of rear travel and a frame made to take a beating. I think it uses through axle 150mm rear hubs, $$$...

I would get one but shipping is 200$!!

Today I spent 3H of $h*t trying to change the bottom braket on my bike, and when i finally got the old one out and cleaned the threads, the new one wouldn't get in, at least not straight, putting load on the bearings... I finally gave up and screwed it the most I could :/

This is how i finally got it out, and it was still super hard to turn  :

I went from 24 to 30t on the crank, and got everything quite well lined, no more chain skipping, even starting up on highest gear!
Now I just hope that the swingarm will survive some more intense offroad stuff :)
