Do any other ESC's work with astroflight motors ?

Postby usurper » Sat Jun 23, 2012 4:10 pm

hI m wondering if anyone knows of any other escs that would work well with with astroflight 8150 or 3210 motors apart from castle creations im asking mostly to do with the cost and the reliabilty for the cost when load is placed on them when riding [seen a few posts with burnt cc esc's] i would prefer to use an ebike style esc if i could find one small enough say around 10x6x4cm does anyone know of any? ive seen a few here and there but they quite had many wires for rear lights brakes etc defeating the object of the ideas i have for small and neat look :?

Powerful , Reliable, Cheap.
Pick any two of those requirements , and you can find a controller to suit.
BUT finding one that combines all three at once ?? ...Castle is the closest "off the shelf" you will find.
There are several other RC ESC's that will drive the Astro's, but they wont be cheaper.
there are some "modified Ebike controllers" .. that have been adapted, but you wont find them on Ebay.

Oh, and you didnt say if you wanted sensored or not ?

Did you buy your 3220 used? The reason I ask is, it seems odd to look for a controller cheaper than the $300 Castle unit for a motor that cost $700.......

I have tried an umber of them and have only found the Castle to be truely ideal for this (and even they are not perfect for e-bike use).

I agree with the previous post. You can have 2 but not all 3 requirements at the same time. Sorry.......

actually i didnt explain myself properly i dont mind payinng a 1000$ if there esc is reliable and small it just that the only thing ive seen small is the CC esc but they didnt seem reliable considering they cost so much compared to the cheap e-bike escs if i could find a small reliable alternative i would buy it any suggestions were to look, i didnt think the astroflight motos were sensored i assumed id need unsensored i have a used 8150 but im thinking of combining two or two 3210s the reason why i wanted the reliablity has more to do with my weight im not huge [15stone] but for a esc that was designed to run an rc it would be a nightmare to be buying a new esc every month because i was burning them out id rather spend 600 and get one that would last just need it to be small to fit with my design ideas thanx for your comments:o

I have successfully used a Hobbyking Sentilon HV100 ESC with an Astro 3210, but I would still recommend the Castle Creations ESC in preference.

Most important point is to add extra capacitors as per examples on ES, whether using Castle or any other ESC.

You can also provide some extra insurance by using the RC version of the Cycle Analyst to provide your throttle signal, this can then provide some current limiting.

what price are you paying for this ESC that has yet to be proven on an Ebike ?
..Or have you seen a review of it in Ebike use with an Astro motor?

usurper, I experimented in order to find what was the least expensive ESC I could find that would work well. I recommend saving up a few bucks and paying what it takes to get the Castle ESC, that being said...IMHO the "next best" is the Hobbywing ESCs. I don't know if they work well with an Astro, so it could end up being wasted money, YMMV. The Hobby King Turnigy worked "OK", and the generic Chinese ESC didn't have an LVC so it fried my LiPo pack.

does anyone have the link for the tutorial for adding extra capcitors?

The capacitors will have two leads marked "+" and "-". They get soldered onto the red/black power leads going into the ESC. If you aren't paying attention and get them backwards, then after you power up...the caps will pop open and smell bad...two dollars each. Need one cap for a friction drive, maybe two for a BB-drive, and I'd recommend four if you are driving the rear axle (based on what I've read, if you are unsure...more is better).

Here are the two big threads on capacitors, the first link has my recommendations. Caps will arrive in your mailbox in an envelope in less than a week, as I said, two dollars each.
