hi

some people at the university want to make a hydrogen fuel cell boat. does anyone have a link to Etec or any other really powerfull motors?

Cheers

If money is no object I'd be looking at the Solomon Tech motors. I've been thinking I'd like to get something like this on a boat one day.

The bigger ones will do close to 10kW. And they do regen too.

If money does matter...

Cheaper still are some of the golfcart motors to be found on Ebay..

Check out this site for both the Etek and the Brushless Etek (they also have controllers for both).

Idd, check it out twice

cheers. i've forwarded these links to the guy with the big budget. hes very happy!!

three more.

BluWav Motors
E motion's 16 kw motors are built to our specifications by
BluWav Systems of Dearborn, MI. With its recent acquisition of Wavecrest Laboratories, BluWav is a recognized leader in hub motors, electric propulsion, and energy systems for the military, commercial, automotive, marine and industrial markets.

The company's Adaptive Motor System transforms electrical energy into mechanical motion with exceptional power and efficiency. It's an advanced form of PWM control and motor design that provides more torque and greater efficiency in a smaller package.

The 16 kw motor features multiple stator windings, or coils, that can be reconfigured on the fly so the motor draws only the minimum amount of electricity needed to achieve desired propeller speed and torque. This is especially important when operating off battery electricity alone.

Every three milliseconds, the Adaptive Motor System determines which windings should be energized and adjusts the current and voltage in them. The system monitors inputs from the operator, and proprietary control algorithms compute appropriate responses to the inputs. Power electronics convert these responses into a specific drive sequence for each coil or series of coils in the stator.

Greater efficiency also comes from a unique motor structure. The stator coils are wound to form separate electromagnetic poles that are magnetically isolated from each other. This arrangement concentrates the magnetic flux for greater strength and prevents transformer interference effects between coils.

Let us know how much it costs.

If I were you, I would start pricing and sizing your H2 fuel cells first. They tend to be extremely expensive.

Wavecrest eh?

As I recall, their fancy "adaptive motor system" was outperformed by a plain old Crystalyte motor.

I'm sure its a good motor, but I'm skeptical of the hype.

isn't the energy density of lifepo4 greater than that of h2 + tank?

From what I understand its a PITA to store the H2 since the tank the size of your trunk will only carry like 1-2kg of h2 due to its heavy construction.

also you have to deal with high pressure combustible gasses. expensive membranes that don't work at all temperatures, not to mention that you will probably have to stick to some pretty strict regulations to get that much combustible expandable gas on a watercraft.

You are better off making a lifepo4 boat with quick chargers for 80 pct charge in 30 mins. I doubt you have a h2 refilling station at the dock so this person would have to tow the boat out and take it to be refilled everytime (at a VERY high cost).

Also these stations aren't everywhere! I have one next to my house but its one of 12 in the country or so.

So basically by making an h2 boat you are not only creating a very short range boat, but you are also tied to a single h2 refueling station since no matter how efficient you make it, you will never get to another station.

I would take a look at these posts:

myadventure seems to have a boat and he knows the tremendous amount of energy they take.

its a university. they relish tackling those types of problems. thats the whole reason for the project.
