That rim is fine. Straighten it yourself if you've got the skills, or take it to any wheel shop, they will have it good as new in a few minutes for very little cost. That is extremely minor damage to a steel wheel.

If you can't fix it yourself, ask the wheel shop if they can work with the motor left in the wheel. Some of them need to clamp through the middle, and some just roll the bead out flat only fixtureing off the rim itself. Either way, its a way easy fix for a steel rim, and it wont effect strength.
For ebike parts, don't be a douche, buy from http://www.ebikes.ca or http://www.MethTek.com

John in CR wrote:That's steel, so I'd just bend/bang it out just like I've done with auto rims in the past. If you can find a good old fashioned full service type service/gas station (do those even exist anymore?) they could do it no problem. Just be sure to supervise and let them know the rim is fairly thin steel, but those side covers are cast AL, so no banging on them.

I was working on my batt pack for the bike tonight, so I can run it with SteveO's super 36 monster controller. In the am I'm going to pick up some of the smallest gauge steel wire I can find to make some big toroidal coils that I don't have to worry about saturating at 400-500 phase amps. They'll go on each phase to protect the controller.

Also, I can't wait to try making a double statored motor and the phases in series. It seems like a perfect solution to retain the high Kv and high current handling, but double the inductance should mean happy controllers. Double the torque and ventilating at the center with much of the air flow through the gap will be some nice side effects. 8)

My brother, who trained and qualified as an auto mechanic, says we should heat it and then he can bend it back with a vise grips. Anyways it will suit its purpose for making up the rear arm and the drops. I might use it for its intended purpose {1500-2000w}

So it was you who bought the 36 Mosfet from SteveO? What about the weird 30 Mosfet or whatever controller from the guy in England???

I would love to see a few photos of your double-statored motors.

Seems we are really pushing the boundary out here. In Ireland, people are way behind the pace, with a few exceptions. They think the 250w geared hub is something to marvel over.

A BMX with a fat moped motor in it is something to marvel over. Those 8000w rated motors look the business.

CHeers LFP. :D As I was saying to JohnCr....my brother reckons heat-treatment and a vise-grips, gently-gently, should do the trick. We are lucky, he works for Becton-Dickinson, the syringe company, and their factory has an entire tool shop full of guys who just sit around and make parts for themselves, waiting for a machine to break down. They can tool and fix pretty much anything. It's a relief to hear she isn't totally shot. :D

And we will be overtaking guys who's SUV's are getting gallons-to-the-mile ratings.

What's fascinating here is that you have raw stuff being pumped out in China but its the fabricators and the open-source guys who get their hands on it over here and make the difference. A 1500w motor is pretty useless without the system to clamp it into. Hal and his crew have come up with something very special. John's bike is a sort of continental-variation on that particular theme. I like both bikes.

When I first came here I used to ask about how to give my bike "vehicular performance". Well this is it. The X5305 at 72v and 80A or so let's me hang with cars, when it is in a BMX wheel. These hubbies and what Hal is doing push us beyond that. I love it. :D

Yeah, I'll be sure to hand out "free" goes on my bike to the first few riders while I am waiting for those RPM's to do their thang. We might be having another IceCube benevolence fund if it goes wrong.

MightyVolt,

You can't heat it up unless the rim is bolted to the magnet backing ring, so it can be removed. You'd ruin the magnets. It can be easily be first bent back and then banged into shape. I'm surprised your bro has never dealt with a bent rim. It sounds like those shop guys would do it easily. Just let them know there's temp sensitive magnets and epoxy on the inner circle of the rim, and to be careful with the wiring harness.

Please don't compare my bike to the Greyborg bike. There's is a well designed dual suspension ebike designed from the ground up. All I did was hack a good quality older freeride bike to accept a big motor.

Yes, I got SteveO's 36fet monster. The 30fet from the UK is probably sitting at the post office. I've got 4110's so I may get someone to upgrade it to a beast. I'm trying one of the China connections too, so soon I may have enough controllers to match my motor and battery stockpile.

Wait till you guys see my planned build for a two SuperVish builds, one with the battery box in the same location but is not unsprung weight, and the other with 1.4kwh built into the frame that requires no balance charging or monitoring along with a compact but high power hub motor used in a way that isn't unsprung weight.

I've been trying to figure out how to make a transformable ebike. It would be kinda like an underwater jetski, that as you hit the beach you pull up on the steering mechanism which exposes smallish fatty tires ala Hanebrink turning the underwater e-jetski into an all terrain high power silent ebike without even stopping.

Being honest, the Hannebrink thing looks terrible. It gives the game away and apart from its excellent off-road capabilities, I can't see why anyone would be into it. If I was rich I would have one, but in the meantime.....

Wait a second John.... Are you saying this hubmotor has a 270mm stator diameter that is 50mm wide???????

This would make it something I must have.... I need one... This has insane potential.

No need. I worked the numbers on it, and if I'm understanding him correctly, and it's really 270mm stator with 50mm width, it's capable of higher thrust than my deathbike!!!

For the record, we measured the stator recently when we opened up this beast to ventilate it.
It is indeed 270mm x 50mm...

We completed the beautification and wiring of the bike yesterday, and have gotten a few test rides in. The torque is tremendous. It is certainly the quickest machine I have ever driven.
The 36fet with 4110s was getting pretty hot  , so we wired in a 12v source for the fan, and have been fiddling with the programming. The motor is staying totally cool to the touch, so I can't wait until we can feed it properly. It's already scary fast as-is.

The locals are going NUTS over the bike. We get whistles and shouts on literally every street. I like to think it's because of the aluminum air scoops I made for the swingarm. Functional AND sexy. People have followed Dad to the store just to ask where they can get one. And when he tells them that he built it, they walk away even more impressed. The bike looks really good now, and I am sure Dad will be posting pictures and info soon for everyone to drool over.

Once we get the controller calibrated properly, I will be making a SuperV vs. Clown Bike video. Dad's 260lb load on SuperV against my 175lb load on Clown (hitting 10kW), and it still won't be a close race. But it will be a good video at least...

Sheriff got an overhaul 103mph on 30s

Postby John in CR » Sun May 19, 2013 2:22 pm

Not a typo, yes SuperV powered by HubmonsterHE hit 103mph (166kph) today. The video is crap, so I need to do another one for you guys before I take it down to 25s, which will be more than fast enough for me. Too low of partial duty is causing too much heat in the controllers and motor to be a long term solution with this wheel size. High voltage with Hubmonster really needs to be done as a mid-drive, and I recently picked up an extra for exactly that. I think with gearing to 75mph max, then I'll be able to boost current up nice and high with no heat issues and greater efficiency.

In the meantime here's what 103mph is like on an ebike. I don't care how janky Chalo thinks it is.

More exposed makes you more careful. That's simple fact. Plus my feet are so used to flops that they don't like the confines of shoes. They feel smothered, so I'd have to be doing something requiring steel toed boots to change my footwear.

Since you were here I let the kids ride Wahoo, my mid-drive. They were into it for a while, but not all that interested. I just don't understand, because if my father was into ebikes I would have bugged him every day, all day, until I had one, and I would ride it to death. That's how I got a gokart when I was 6.

After my post I remembered why I let this thread die last year, because I changed motors. The original motor was like a Magic Pie with a 50mm stator and wound with 1.5 turns. Due to the poor iron it has heat issues above about 1krpm. Starting last July I began using HubmonsterHE, a high efficiency 6 phase hubbie. While it has a similar Kv at 16rpm/volt, it's pole count almost 3 times lower and much better design and quality of steel combine to make it capable of 2krpm without issue. The smaller stator diameter is only partially made up by being 58mm wide, but what it lacks in raw torque, it more than makes up for in power potential. As a mid-drive it could easily handle 200V and 50kw input.

Sorry if I've caused any confusion, but SuperV is really the sheriff, and I'll put it up against any hubmotored bike or motorcycle under 200lb for street racing, and SuperV weighs only 137lb. Show me another hubmotored bike that a 270lb fat guy can take to the store for groceries and on the return hop on the highway and break 100mph that doesn't weigh 400lbs or more and cost $5k or more with DIY. Even if there is one that can hit 100, I bet SuperV would run rings around it on the street. It's the closest you can get to Luke's ebike with a hubmotor.
