The most powerful hubmotored ebike on the planet

Postby John in CR » Fri Jun 08, 2012 3:10 pm

The CA says it all, that's 30kw baby (40hp)! FWIW this peak occurred somewhere between 25 and 30mph, so Hubmonster was at somewhere north of 75% efficiency at the time. Also, SuperV is 100% street legal as a bicycle.

Yep, mucho impressive on both numbers. 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) Reallllly cool it's street legal where you live, you lucky dog.

It would be street legal in my state too, if the top speed was less than 30 mph, but I bet it's a wee bit faster. I'm just happy enough I have a speed limit but no watt limit. 750w sucks if you have a hill nearby.

I have 200mm dropout width on my Fatboy, maybe I could fit one of those monster scooter hubs without too much mods

Same here--as long as I keep the top speed to 20MPH, it doesn't matter how quickly I get there. ;)

I'm still working on the whole power thing, though, since I only just this week doubled the power of CrazyBike2 from 2KW to 4KW, peak. (Dunno sustained yet as I've got to go test ride it later when it isn't 105F outside).

10ah20s Turnigy 20c hardpacks, the super cheapies from over a year ago. Plus 5ah20s Zippy 25c. Plus 5ah20s made of a combo of the Turnigy's and Zippy's, since I only have 14 4s packs of the Turnigy after last year's spontaneous combustion of 1 cell.

Voltage sag was 10.7V.

I won't leave the bike at this setting for long. It's just too unmanageable. I have to start in a speed setting of 50% to avoid flipping too easily. I rolled on to WOT deliberately, and switched too 100% without letting off the throttle just acceleration began to taper. I was leaning way forward luckily because I was a bit slow on the switch and the burst of thrust lifted the front wheel slightly all the way through peak power and came back down as acceleration started to taper off. It was a bit too much excitement for me. It was one of those things that just needed to be done. 8)

70A is the max with regen set on 0. It's a bit strong at lower speeds and I have to push myself back away from the handlebars in preparation for the braking force, but I could actually use more force at high speeds. At 40mph and up 70A of regen is fairly gentle.

Thx. I understand your comments about trembling when you get off of DeathBike. I'd be too chickenshit to ride SuperV without the 3 speed switch, which tames the throttle nicely. Even with it I get plenty of one wheel surprises, especially when switching at the wrong time with a moderate or more throttle position.

30kw in a 19" wheel that tops out just below 60mph is a completely different world from the 12kw we ran when you were down, which was in a 24" wheel on a motor having 20% less stator width and 25% less stator diameter that was pushed into saturation. Based on the feel of increases in thrust as I progressively increased the current limits, Hubmonster may still not have reached saturation.

I do need to get some advice about taming the rear end for better contact with the ground. The heavy rear wheel is airborne way too much of the time through the smallest of bumps, which gets "exciting" in curves, but has definitely improved my riding skills.

I definitely have to do the switchable current limits on the fly mod. I may not want this much on tap as a daily rider, but I definitely would like to have it on command. Giving lessons in the performance potential of electrics is incredibly satisfying.

I'm working to come up with one for you, but much lighter and instead of unsprung weight the axle will be inside the suspension pivot point.

Shorts, tee, Monster baseball cap on backward, and flops...my usual riding attire unless I'm going on roads I'm not intimately familiar, which usually includes highway time and speeds where I can't hear anything but the wind, in which case I wear my helmet. Offroad or racing where going down is a foregone conclusion I'd armor up, but typical riding gets the focus it deserves to ensure going down has such minuscule odds that protecting up is a negative. It ain't for everyone.

Yep, those are the Zippies from way back when you had some fits and starts before ebiking clicked into it's proper place in your life, and I gobbled up the good deal.

My ex brother in law is a doctor in Austin and is begging for a similar bike, though no way he gets 30kw, so when you see a really big guy (but not fat) zipping around town you'll know his name is Dr. Mike, though he'll always be Mikie to me.

Arlo1 should have it. He helped Gordo out, and I think Gordo has the exact same motor still imprisoned in a scooter instead of a 200lb less ebike where it belongs. With magnet wire strands in the equivalent of 8awg in 1.5turns on 21 teeth for each phase it's pretty low. That's why my SteveO 36 has a blower, and also why the low phase/battery limit ratio is so low at 1.3:1, so the phase current spikes aren't like sledgehammers.

I reharnessed the motor with 8awg to match the windings, and that connects to double 10awg from the controller about 2 feet from the axle. It's costing me though, and once I get around to moving the controller to the front of the downtube I will shorten and thicken all wires to reduce sag a bit and ensure they stay cool.

Coolest Dad on the planet.

Just my way of ensuring your quickest possible return. Everyone misses you already, and they put me in charge. June is always my most productive month in preparation of the July mini-vacation. Mission accomplished on the 30kw target, so SuperV now has double the power to weight ratio as when you last rode it. Next is to step of the pressure with the launch of a near waterproof high efficiency mid-drive beach/trail cruiser, and at least one electric watercraft, both in the next few weeks.

I'd pack up the family and move immediately if that was enforced and there was no reasonable route to a street legal high power very lightweight EV.

Thanks, I lucked into bargains for a motor and controller that made it possible. I'm just a meat and potatoes builder with a few ideas who can build a strong enough bike to see if they work. I know my bikes can't hang with Luke's, at least not without putting a 100lb rider on mine. I'd love to get to one of the race events, but to spend time with my ES friends, not to race. I'm no racer.

Forwarding the cause by destroying motos and cars up to 50mph is different, but that's not racing. It's shattering misconceptions and showing people a better way. Plus it's been great free and fun advertising, since I have a ready to go customer base begging for a product before I'm even ready to sell them something.
