Ezip 36v conversion help

I took my rack mounted battery apart and got the two SLA batteries from the inside. I hooked another SLA battery to them (in series) to get 36v. They are all 12v10ah.

I'm not very experienced with wiring, but my multimeter shows 36v (actually looks closer to 40v) coming out. I plugged it into my bike and NO JUICE! I took the third battery out of the circuit and the juice flows. So I think I've narrowed it down to two possibilities:

1. My battery wiring is bad. I attached a picture of my batteries. Is it possible to tell from this picture where my wiring is bad or does it look like this should work?

2. I think the more likely problem is that my controller doesn't support 36v. I've heard good things about the Ezips from 2008 and earlier supporting 36v (I have the Mountain Trailz 2008 http://www.walmart.com/ip/Ezip-2008-Tra ... ke/8467094), but this seems to be the most likely culprit. Does anyone have experience upgrading a controller for this bike? Can you make any recommendations? You are correct, the newer versions of the EZip controllers are no good for 36 volts. You will need to get a replacement controller.

That sounds like my luck. I thought with the 2008 model I'd have a good chance of having a 36v compatible controller, but it sounds like no such luck.

I think my wiring is correct then. I just dropped another $45 to order the controller I linked. Got my fingers crossed that it fits. It says 5 pin (which I think means there are 5 plugs?). My controller seems to have 5 plugs, but it's like one of the plugs is kind of separated into three parts.

It means the throttle connection has 5 pins. I have no idea what an ezip has. Look at this to compare to yours.

Well this is just frustrating. I can't find any information about what kind of controller my bike has (Ezip 2008 Mountain Trailz). I can't find how many pins it needs.

I ordered a 5 pin controller and I think that's the wrong one. I'm even having trouble finding a 5 pin throttle that I think will match the new controller I ordered. I guess it's a crapshoot doing this all online and I don't have any stores around me. Argh!

Appears to me you have stuff that will work coming. 30 amps controller, so easy on that motor. Keep an eye on how hot it gets.

You may have to change some connectors in order to get the proper wiring in place. It is unlikely that the controller you bought is going to match up with the one on the Izip.

Did you get this up and running? How is it working? I'm getting a similiar setup and am wondering about the throttle/controller combo.

Besides the sprocket upgrades recommended by DrkAngel, I upgraded my eZip to 36V back in March by adding another 12V battery to each of the 24V Currie battery packs. In addition to the batteries I bought the controller and throttle from TNC Scooters. I ordered the 36 Volt Controller with 5 Pin Throttle Connector (Model: XK-022D) (#CTL-101197) for $37.50 and the Odis - Half Twist Throttle with 5 Pin Connector and 36 Volt LED Meter (#THR-101115) for $16.50. I've been very happy with them. I also bought some of the extra modular connectors since I wasn't sure if I needed them to modify anything. I think I used a couple of them, but don't recall which ones.

Hey Midnight,

I have a couple of questions about the new controller.

I too ordered the same throttle and controller and see that the throttle hooks right up to the controller. Cool - but does it really just plug in and work ? Or do I have to change the wires ?

One other question is this Charge Inhibitor Connector wire. What does it do ? Do I have to hook it up to power to make controller work or can I just leave it unattached ?

Hope you can help me with these questions. Motor and Battery wires are the easy part - too bad I have to cut them and put connectors on them as they are backwards from the stock controller. Oh well
