farings and heat

Postby llile » Fri Jul 06, 2012 7:44 pm

It's hotter than hell out there right now. Actually, my midwest town is actually hotter than Phoenix today, but only by 1 degree. It is just punishment to be outside. I haven't ridden since it started breaking 100F every day, but I plan to, just to see how it is.

Anybody used a faring in this kind of heat? What are your experiences? Did it make you overheat in the summer? Was it a part faring, or a full velomobile faring?

Yes, last summer, Going to California 2011 between Pioneer and Fresno. My controllers were not covered over by the fairing. They are 12-FET Lyen and running about 2 hp each at WOT; on a 2WD – very warm though not hot, and I didn’t worry too much about sag. Mainly I kept the speed down a bit to lengthen my distance. The part that did get overheated was completely biological: By the time I got to Fresno I was in the throes of heat exhaustion. After 20 years of living in the PNW, my blood has thickened and I struggle in the Valley heat unless I’m sitting beneath a lawn sprinkler with an ice cold beer in hand and my feet in the pool wearing sunblock 5000.
