Wow. Pretty nice looing package. Must be 250W unit to contain chain throw and drive issues?

Looks like it would be pedal assist only with that standard (non freewheel) crankset.
Great looking packaging.

Thanks for sharing the info.
But I like to build by my own (cheaper) and my own taste/design

motor weight of 3,500 grams and 60nm of torque..
"Gewicht von 3.500 Gramm und 60 Newtonmetern Drehmoment"
400Wh battery.. "Akku leistet 400Wh"

yeah probably pedal assist but as intended for the offroad market including usa its not likely limited to 250w power.. im guessing 750w usa power limit?? but your right, one can only run so much power through a crank/chain puller without increasing chain stretch and drive train wear..

also of course its no match for the power and customization possibilities of a diy build haha
but.. i bet it handles offroad real nice and climbs like a goat..

giant is one of the largest bike manufacturers in the world..
they make their own brand as well as manufacture the bikes for many other brands (that are made in taiwan & china)..
this ebike thing may be catching on.. 8)
the next question is.. what will specialized, trek, etc answer be.. :?:

Yup I like the idea how they build the bike.
Much easier to replace flat tires, worn out chainrings etc.

Yes ofcourse the mid drivetrain >>> torque 8)

I found the hardtail hub motor version from Giant for sale in Norway
http://www.finn.no/finn/torget/annonse? ... e=42237280
Image

The price is NOK 24.990 = USD$4,200 - not a very cheap bike...

I have just bought the non electric verion of it (Giant taloon 29) and I'm doing my own conversion.

After seeing a few of the frames now, Bosch seems to be the closest thing to a "standard" for these mid drives.
In that sense I hope the motor mount approach isn't a patented part of the design - would be great to see some non pedelec versions from competitors.

I am making an assumption about pedelec there - it is probably some sort of quasi-schlumph style bottom bracket and crankset in there given the size of that front chainring.

After crudely mocking up a concept last night using cardboard, I like the way these OEM battery boxes look in the frames.
Are there any flat bar road / commuter bikes emerging using mid drive?

I call them all vacuum cleaner bikes, as they look like a old style upright. More novelty / half hearted to me. I may be wrong, but dedicated bike frames for these systems is not good idea unless it does something new and real special. We may be starting a ebike production bubble. Time will tell.

Doesn't seem to be a lot of watt-hours on board these bikes - which will suit some pushibike buyers focused on weight. (The first question I get from non-e bikers is how much weight does it add?)

I think there is still a good market for double/triple the torque with similar battery sizing scales too.

... double/triple the torque...
Aren't these motors rated at 50N-m, already? Wouldn't that make it 100 to 150N-m of torque?!

WOW! A bike with *that* motor ought to be able to climb a 100% grade!

Not really. Even my ten year old Aprilia mid drives are still a bit Meh at 80Nm stall.
A BPM Code 10 at 40A / 2kW would be double. Same for a 4 to 6kW DD.
Even a pedal rider who can legpress 100kg at the gym, on a 155mm crank would be churning out comparable torque, just not able to do it constantly.

It'd be interesting to see what sort of torque Adam Mercier gets on his GNG. That's where I want to be...
