That's 20 miles of pedal-only range, and 10 using the motor. Back here in reality, 325wH of battery is not going to be taking you 30 miles, unless it's all downhill.

20Wh/mile isn't unreasonable at 36v speeds, 10 with assist (which is it's only mode) is possible. 20mph @250 watts sounds right, 325wh should do more than an hour of riding. I'd say 25 mile range is probably reasonable.

Bleah. :roll: Puts me off me breakfast. The electronics might be very smart, but putting the battery in the wheel is dumb.
 
Mostly, adding more weight to the wheel itself is bad for handling. Makes any kind of servicing the battery harder. Batteries hate heat, so it's brilliant to put it where it's hot eh? There's at least 3 reasons for you.

Perhaps all their stuff doesn't have the battery in the hub. Not all their ideas have to be shit, but battery in the wheel is dumb.

But bear in mind, the way the wires exit the motor on 99% of hubmtors is awfully dumb too!!

I like the use of lighter materials where possible, but a battery pack the size you can fit in that hub doesn't have to be awkward carried on the frame.

Integrating the bike controls with the smart phone, and gps tracking is good stuff!! But I'd want a throttle myself.

I didn't get how the phone charges, Off that funky wheel generator? Ewww.

I also wonder how the motor heat leaves the motor, in a climate like mine.

I disagree. I have a 15 Ahr 48V battery that weighs 18 lbs. Assuming half the weight of the device is batteries, allowing for an 80% DOD (and you will NOT get 1000s of cycles out of a battery taking it to 80% DOD every time), assuming roughly the same energy density as the above battery, and 18 Wh/mi, this leads to a maximum range of less than 10 miles.

The only range spec that makes sense is motor only. If you including pedaling, the range is infinity.

That said, there is an aesthetic appeal to this device. I think there are people who could use this and be very happy with it. However, it is an even smaller slice of the market than ebikes have already. I'd like to see them succeed, but based on the past performance of the ebike market, I think they will sell all they can pretty quickly and then they will go under when they start supporting them in use. But I am perennially bad at predicting what will be a financial success.
 
I am interested on how they can offer the internet GPS tracking when you lose your bike. A couple of challenefes for this:

1. It needs cellphone internet. If so, this will be a monthly subscription. Maybe they worked a deal where you only activate it when your bike gets stolen?

2. $550 for the unit is pretty close margin. Battery, motor, controller, custom make, wheel, etc. Unless they get this made in China, they will not make profit. But making things in China means the quality control is shit. So price wise, I think the Chinese will surprise them if they sell at this price.

it's " Cool " .. but has serious limitations.

However, that being said, if you are a small person, fit, who pedals a single speed bike already, this thing is your ticket.. ( 200w ? while you pedal ) .. yeah i can see 30 miles on flat, no wind , 100 lb rider on skinny tires and lycra )

quick release, nice.. I suspect the front dynamo charger is for simplicity ( no wires to run back to the spinning rear wheel ) a cell ph does not need much power so not a huge drag.. but still a drag.

However, for the rest of us, with bad knees and bicycles with derailleurs, and disk brakes, who ride in the rain( yeah i want my expensive phone up there on the handlebars... sure ), not sure where i'd find those spokes if need be..

For it's intended market, i think it's pretty nifty, different.
 
Watching the video, I was trying to understand why the guy had a hub made of a pillow... then they explained.

dogman, I don't think this product had you, or your climate, in mind :lol:
this seems nice, for the European-esque style folk, like the guy in the video. no serious bike commuter or ebike commuter would bother. that being said, there are far more hipster types out there that would want this rather than, say, dogman's bouncing betty (no offence intended :) )
 
How does the motor get it's input for pedal assist? With no PAS sensor and no controls on the handle bars, other than the smart phone, there must be some sort of torque sensor in the rear sprocket. Hope that phone has a kill switch Icon displayed for panic situations.
At only 9 pounds and simple installation I think it could be a hit if they can keep the price down.
