http://www.bike-eu.com/home/nieuws/2018 ... s-10132613

Next to Hero also India’s second biggest bike maker – Avon Cycles – is increasingly focusing towards ‘electrification’ of its offering.

SFGATE is the Hearst-owned website sister-site of the San Francisco Chronicle and the go-to online source for all news and entertainment related to the Bay Area.

SFGATE began in 1994 as one of the first major news websites in history, ushering in a new era in information and interaction with digital news, and even winning a Pulitzer prize. SFGATE reaches 30 million unique readers each month, ranking it among the top five newspaper websites nationally.
Man Dies Having "Too Much" Fun on Electric Bicycle Monday:
http://www.sfgate.com/news/bayarea/arti ... 507499.php
A 7 Thousand-year-old man died after crashing his electric bicycle in Danville on Monday afternoon, a town spokesman said.

The bicyclist, identified by the Contra Costa County coroner's office as Danville resident Keith Howard, was riding his bike on Highland Drive near Lonesome Road at about 2:55 p.m. Monday when he hit a speed bump, town spokesman Geoff Gillette said.

Howard went airborne, then landed and crashed. He was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where he was pronounced dead later that afternoon, Gillette said.

No one else was involved in the crash, he said.
Meanwhile... in unrelated news from last month...

Bay Area Traffic Fatalities Up Sharply Since 2010:
http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2017/1 ... ince-2010/
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – Since 2010, the number of traffic fatalities each year has gone up in the San Francisco Bay Area, according to data from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.

Last year 455 people died on Bay Area roadways, up from 318 in 2010 and 422 in 2013.

Officials with the commission said the number of fatalities has grown faster than vehicle miles traveled and population growth.

The officials also said that pedestrians and bicyclists are a growing share of the traffic fatalities.

Peddling bikes really suits Halfords:
https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/pedd ... -55dpjm3bv

Starts:
They may be rather tricky to wrap but new bikes proved a popular Christmas present judging by yesterday’s festive trading update from Halfords.

The motoring and cycling retailer reported a slightly better than expected 2.7 per cent increase in like-for-like sales in the 15 weeks to January 12, with bikes and cycling kit up 7.8 per cent.

Although the weak pound pushed bicycle prices higher as more are manufactured overseas, Halfords said it had offset price inflation with an increase in the number sold.
Includes:
He said [Jonny Mason, the group’s chief financial officer] particular highlights included the growth in fitting services for car parts, cycle repair and increased sales of bikes, electric bikes and dash cams.
Hehe... Halfords still being... coy... re their sales of bikes with assist. Meanwhile, across the Channel, in Belgium...

Starts:
"I love it when people hate things at a festival," Wesley Enoch declares. It's not something you'd expect the artistic director of the Sydney Festival to say. But this celebrated Indigenous playwright doesn't mind if audiences love or hate a performance, just so long they try something new.

"The opera, the ballet, the art gallery. These are your cultural bread and butter," Enoch says over lunch at a cafe near his apartment in Surry Hills.
Includes:
During the festival proper, Enoch trundles from event to event on his electric bicycle, chatting to artists, wooing donors and dining with supporters.

The Dumbest Tech Products Coming In 2018
https://www.lifehacker.com.au/2018/01/d ... d-in-2018/

Starts:
CES, the consumer technology showcase held each year in Las Vegas, highlights what are meant to be the latest and greatest advancements in technology. Things meant to make you go "whoa" many times over, at least according to this year's official CES billboards.

But as one observer remarked, this year's felt more "no" than whoa, with wacky gadgets you don't need and voice recognition robots that failed to understand commands or didn't respond at all.

For the most part, the show seemed to be about artificial intelligence or voice recognition being integrated into everything, from TVs and cars to fridges and toilets.
Includes/Ends:
A device you can attach to your bicycle to turn it into a hybrid electric bicycle in 30 seconds also seemed useful.

But it seemed clear that ever since Microsoft and various other tech giants began to drop out of CES, primarily due to it not suiting their product roadmap unveiling cycle, it has lost a little bit of its flare.

The more interesting tech is now usually reserved for companies to announce themselves. Apple exclusively reserves its product launches for itself to unveil, while Samsung typically leaves its smartphone disclosures to Mobile World Congress.

The Electric Bike That Saved My Life:
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/19/styl ... -life.html

Starts:
Two years ago, in January, my husband and I walked into a foreclosed house on a tree-lined street in Bedford-Stuyvesant that no one had lived in for 22 years.

“I could really see us having kids here,” he whispered into my ear as we tiptoed over the detritus of squatters and failed contractors.

For the first three years of our marriage we had been living in a series of rentals, but we dreamed of owning, and this was a whole house. A long-neglected brownstone in need of a ton of work, yes, but a house nonetheless.
Includes:
It had been years since I’d sat on that saddle, but there didn’t seem to be any other option. Manhattan is mostly flat, but the bridge that takes you there — the Manhattan Bridge — is a mini mountain, sloping up toward its apex for what feels like an eternity.

My first attempt to summit was a dismal failure. I was gasping for air after only a few moments and had to dismount and walk, dragging those two wheels behind me.

Some days, as I huffed my way over that bridge, my eyes would fill with tears. Other days I would arrive at the bridge’s foot in a full-fledged panic attack, sobbing on the phone to whatever friend would answer. It was too long and high, and I was too tired and weak. That damn bridge, like my life, felt insurmountable.

If Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte ever visits Ireland, it's a given that action man Taoiseach Leo Varadkar will go for a spin on a bicycle with him, although we're still in the ha'penny place compared to the Netherlands where cycling is the primary form of transport. But we are catching up.

Initiatives like cycle lanes, greenways, city bikes and tax rebates have all contributed to the huge increase in cycling. This week I'm looking at different aspects of cycling, while the table shows some prices you can expect to pay.

Electric bikes used be considered only for older people but that's changing. "Teenagers are buying them now for school runs," says Ginty. For maximum speeds of 25km, you don't need tax, insurance or a licence - over that and it's considered a motorbike.

Firm behind Paris bike hire chaos slapped with million-euro bill:
https://www.thelocal.fr/20180119/firm-b ... -euro-bill

Starts:
Paris's public cycle hire company said Friday it would hit its contractor with a one-million-euro bill for a chaotic rollout of new bikes that has infuriated cyclists.
The grey Velib bikes -- usually ubiquitous across the French capital -- have been virtually absent for weeks because of the botched handover from previous contractor JCDecaux to Franco-Spanish firm Smovengo.

Autolib' Velib' Metropole, the public-private consortium that runs the scheme, pronounced itself "dissatisfied" and said it would penalise Smovengo a million euros ($1.22 million) as set out in its contract.
Includes:
In October, Paris city hall announced a snazzy redesign of the bikes that would result in a third of them going electric, with the grand re-launch taking place on January 1.

But as of Friday, only 113 of the bike system's docking stations were working -- well short of the 600 that had been promised by the New Year, with 1,400 supposed to be working by the end of March.

The Mercury is a daily newspaper, published in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia...
... and:
Tasmania; abbreviated as Tas and known colloquially as "Tassie") is an island state of Australia. It is located 240 km (150 mi) to the south of the Australian mainland, separated by the Bass Strait. The state encompasses the main island of Tasmania, the 26th-largest island in the world, and the surrounding 334 islands. The state has a population of around 519,100 as of June 2016, just over forty percent of which resides in the Greater Hobart precinct, which forms the metropolitan area of the state capital and largest city, Hobart.
Talking Point: Make cycle tracks part of Hobart's traffic solution:

Includes:
And for those people who think riding a bicycle is only for the young and fit, take a look at electric bicycles. They still help you exercise but cut out the effort needed to climb Hobart's hills. Only when we make it easier for more people to ride bikes can we truly reap the rewards of moving and connecting...

TorqueNews.com, a Hareyan Publishing company, is an automotive-related news website dedicated to covering the latest news about the ebike (and car) industries from all angles.
Future Generation Honda Owners Will Perceive Electric Vehicles as the Norm:
https://www.torquenews.com/1574/honda-k ... icles-norm

Starts:
My mother remembers Horse Stables on Hollywood Boulevard back when she was a girl. Me, I rode the last original electric Red Car streetcars in Southern California with my grandmother as a 5-year old. Soon after General Motors with the help of Standard Oil pushed public transportation back several decades. Today, we move back to the future with the electric car.

As much as things change they remain the same. Today North America’s Auto industry is grudgingly moving forward with the electrification of personal transportation, purportedly in a quest for zero Auto-related exhaust emissions. But truthfully, the momentum we witness today in the EV evolution is driven by government regulation, and a growing sense of the driving public’s “Green” urgency, brought on by a now undisputable change in global weather patterns.
... Ends:
China is currently the fastest growing electric car market in the world, followed by Scandinavia and Europe. The U.S. is pulling up the rear, but we’ll get there. Growth in electric bicycle segment is unprecedented. Today’s young consumer doesn’t question electric power, they expect it. From Hoverboards to skateboards, to electric bicycles, go-carts, and ½ scale electric cars, jeeps, and quads, a new generation grows up with electric. For them, the mainstream electric car will be the norm within a decade -- that’s the logical progression of personal transportation.
