Anyone seen the type of kick stands in the two photos below? They appear to be specifically designed for electric bikes carrying kids:

The difference is that there's three arms, and a large flat area, reducing the likelihood of the stand folding back, or otherwise failing. Compare this to a normal electric bike kick stand:

I saw them absolutely everywhere in Japan, but can't find them anywhere in Australia. I've not had any close calls yet with my son on the back, but as he outgrows the front seat, and I need to install a rear seat, I can see a lot more potential for something going wrong, and I'm keen to preempt that, obviously.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I've seen those on some bikes I've serviced here in Israel. Definitely an Asian thing.

Why not go with a good quality double kickstand? It accomplishes basically the same thing, if you get a good one, and less bulky/less chance of smacking into things or getting it caught on things when maneuvering.

Thanks, but they don't look anywhere near as sturdy.

If the traditional frame like kickstands are as close as I can get, then I guess I will end up getting that, but if anyone does know where I can get those reinforced frame style kickstands, then it looks a lot sturdier for holding a child on a bike.

You'd get thrown in jail here for leaving a child in a bike seat unattended. And I don't care how sturdy the kickstand is, a child will find a way to topple the bike.

I'm not intending to leave them unattended. In fact, right now, I don't even leave him on the bike without at least one hand on the frame. Even then, the only time I do that is opening doors to get the bike in and out of our apartment block. However, a standard kick stand and one hand is still very unstable.

I'm trying to improve safety here guys, not try to get away with more.

I like this kickstand! .. I currently use an Ursus Jumbo kickstand. My wife has my daughter sit on the bike occassionally while she situates herself and gear. It is really solid, but expensive and will eventually break.

This idea looks like it will last longer possibly

EDIT: What ebike is that in the OP ?

oh, now I see those extra arms you were talking about. Yea, I can see how that would be more intense. It's like a whole freaking continental kit for an ebike. Good luck finding one; post it up here if you succeed!

I know that's not what you are after , but all I could find doing some searching.

Hmm here is something https://medium.com/cycling-japan/what-makes-japan-a-great-cycling-nation-5217f260497c

That top one has the same idea, just not as large of a base.

It's the Bridgestone Angelino Petite Assista. (What a mouthful)

Thanks Ohzee, that's pretty much what I've found so far as well. I'm starting to think these things are OEM only. The only thing I found that was for sale was this:

http://www.scootercity.co.uk/spares/electric-bike-spares/zipper-z5-electric-bike-spare-parts/stand-for-z5-e-bike.html

(Two bars instead of three, but still better than just one... Also seems to be specific for another electric bike, so don't know if it will fit a generic DIY electric bike).

The Maruichi 210W double-legged stand is one instance of the kind of kickstand Sunder is interested in. Following are several example links:

The mamabicycle blog writer posted several articles about these kinds of stands. Some good pictures:

There was a blog comment that there's not enough room to mount one of these stands and a rear derailleur at the same time.

Good find! Bravo

EDIT: Too bad we can't get them here in the states. Anyone in Aus or Singapore want to start selling them or help out with a group buy?

Maybe you just help me get them and I will sell them here on ES?

You sir, are incredible.

Unfortunately, all "27 Type" (I presume they mean 27" Wheels, or slightly larger than a 700c wheel), are discontinued :(

But it's a lead, and I will follow them up aggressively.

Great for anyone who needs it for a 26" though.

Edit: Sorry, wait, there is one type out there that's not quite as wide, but looks like a single bar with small loops:

At only $10 AUD, I might try this out, but shipping is $60.

There is also this one:

You know the bitter, bitter irony? I was just in Singapore last week. Just like I wanted one of these just after I left Japan. It's like that guy "Gideon", every hotel I go to, he's been there before me, and every time, he leaves his bible in the bedside stand!

I'm going to try to order one. If it succeeds, I'll post a review here.

Oh, sorry, didn't mean to ignore this.

pricing.jpg

Shipping for this is prohibitive, but if you think there will be interest around the $50USD mark per unit, plus double shipping, I can probably help you out.

$55 SGD is about $50AUD, or about $45USD. I could either ship them in bulk to you, or I could reship directly from Australia, whichever works out cheaper.

I could try to negotiate shipping down, but as the shipping price per unit falls, I suspect that I couldn't actually get much off.

I'm not intending to take any cut out of this. I'll pass on the price as I've incurred it. I'm just happy this was found, and we can keep our bike and our kids safe. (In fact, my first lipo pack I dented because the stand slipped. I put it in a hard case after that).

Thanks mate, but it's not the same thing. That's only a single leg, and no wide base. Was after double leg, or at least single leg with a broader base to stabilise it both back and forth as well as side to side.

My Pedego City Commuter came with a Porteur Massload double kickstand. It is obviously made with substantial materials and has recieved great reviews. While this is a very good double kickstand for the City Commuter as shipped, I started changing the bike's center of gravity and that sent me looking for a different kickstand. The way I set my bike up made it pretty top heavy which resulted in it wanting to fall over with even the slightest of inclines. To address this I went in search of a wider base double kickstand that would mount into my traditional kickstand mounting location. What I found, and purchased, was the Ursus Jumbo Double Kickstand. Wow! What a difference! This is a great solution for my needs.

My complete write-up and photos are here:

I second the Ursus Jumbo. It's the only one that has withstood the abuse of my wife's midtail electric.

I constructed a seat for my 6 year old on the back rack and the Jumbo will hold the bike with her on it easily and confidently.
