hi guys, I am currently staying in melbourne CBD and planning to buy my first electric bike but would like your expert opinion on it before doing anything. I have read quite a few websites and am familiar with what bikes are vicroads compliant but i feel that the 200w to 250w are alittle too slow in my opinion. I have come acrossed this http://www.fullychargedevs.com.au/p...tum-bike-48v-500w-brushless-motor-9ah-battery and feel that the price is quite reasonable.

I plan to use to bike to travel to and fro school and probably around the city (less than 20km per trip). I am open about building one myself but i have no experience whatsoever in such stuff and am afraid that i might screw it up or something. Would really appreciate if i can seek your opinions on this. Thanks!

That said, you can always build a faster bike for a lot less money than a pre-built. Just put a kit on the bike of your choice.

It ain't rocket science. Start with a 26" bike with steel dropouts. The hard part is going to be choosing a battery pack. Personally I use RC lipo from Hobbyking, but there are lots of other options. The kit will likely have a 26A controller, so make sure the pack you get can output at least 26A. That won't be a problem with any size rc lipo, but will be with small lifepo4 and 18650 packs. For a range of 20km, I'd recommend a 10ah 12s rc lipo pack.

I would go with 600 watts for the motor and 36 volts for the battery pack. You should get a kit that allows a 48 volt upgrade in the future. IMO

At first glance, the ready to ride bike you linked looks pretty ok to me. Not cheaper than building your own, but building your own can also be much more expensive than that, once you start buying bigger batteries.
