Batavia is a city in DuPage and Kane counties in the U.S. state of Illinois. A suburb of Chicago, it was founded in 1833 and is the oldest city in Kane County. During the latter part of the 19th century, Batavia, home to six American-style windmill manufacturing companies, became known as "The Windmill City." Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, a federal government-sponsored high-energy physics laboratory, where both the bottom quark and the top quark were first detected, is located in the city. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 26,045, which was estimated to have increased to 26,318 by July 2012.

Article starts:
BATAVIA – An electric vehicle charging station now operates at the Batavia Government Center.

The station is located in the west parking lot next to the utility payment drop-off bin and is available for use by the public. Motorists can use a credit card or the QR code on their phones to pay for the charge.

Includes: The city spent $15,000 to buy, install and maintain the station for three years and hopes to recoup that cost through public use of the station.

Meanwhile... in unrelated news...

The Northern Illinois Municipal Power Agency ("NIMPA") was established in 2004 for the purpose of effecting joint development of electric energy resources for the production, transmission and distribution of electric power and energy . Its current members include the neighboring communities of Geneva, Batavia, and Rochelle, Illinois. Together, NIMPA's members serve approximately 60,000 inhabitants, with an annual peak load of approximately 230 MW.

"The city spent $15,000 to buy, install and maintain the station for three years"... Then watt?... Versus rebating customers of NIMPA $100-$200 each for buying one electric bike?

Batavia is not too far from me, and the local government has a history of throwing money at electric boondoggles, The $15K on a charging station is nothing, given what they invested in a coal fired generator outfit, Prairie State Energy, in Southern IIlinois a few years ago. Since then electricity rates have dropped in other areas, as natural gas and wind power has come online, but the good burghers of Batavia are locked into coal, and paying much higher prices for their power.

Nonetheless, they have some scenic bike paths in that town.

Hmm. I think building out infrastructure to support EV's is more in line with what a government should be doing.

Batavia is part of a vernacular region known as the Tri-City area, along with St. Charles and Geneva, all western suburbs of similar size and relative socioeconomic condition. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 26,045, which was estimated to have increased to 26,318 by July 2012.

Obviously the government there needs to install more electrical outlets in their homes. Poor dears... imagine, existing in this day and age in North America with zero electric outlets in their houses. Shocking!
