Mars ME0913 Owners and discussion thread

Postby atbrandt » Tue Jan 11, 2011 2:02 pm

As I've just received the Mars Electric ME0913 motor, i thought it useful to start a thread discussing the experiences with this motor and create a place for people that consider buying this motor to find info on it.

This is the official site of the motor:
http://www.marselectricllc.com/me0913.html

Some specs:
- 12kW continues; 30 kW peak
- 849,- USD official price
- 92% efficiency between 24-96 volt
- Brushless BLDC / PMSM
- 15.8 kg (seems heavier; need to confirm)
- temperature sensor
- Hall sensors
- 4 poles
- http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/yhst-57437235823410/drawingme0913.pdf
- cooling by internal fan

such a nice motor you bought for a motorbike project ....
Have you already planned the kind of battery to use for the required juice? :P

I limited myself to a ME0907 ... the smaller brother with only one stator ....
Still it is an impressive motor: very massive and nice big bearings for
the heavy duty business of driving the motorbike's chain directly.
I'm planning to mount it inside an enduro frame from a 125 italian gas bike.
I expect to achieve something working in 2 years maximum ...
Should the result not appeal me, I will reuse the motor as a marine outboard.

have fun

ps.

If anybody is interested in the internals of the mars ME0913, I suggest this link:

Wow. I never would have guessed it was an axial flux motor with such a cubic form factor....

Workmanship looks kinda rough. I would have expected better.

As i said I bought the ME0907 (single stator) and I'm very impressed: it is really over-dimensioned and has above average quality bearings .... 8)
On the other side: It is MADE IN CHINA! :? this explains why it is reasonably priced, but also is the main reason
for the -below state of the art- appearance of the stator, just to name one part .... :|
But to be fair to the motenergy company and to Fiorenza: he is aiming to the best compromise between price and quality .... and from my perspective he met that goal very well !

In relation to the idea, given few posts before, to use an e-bike 250W controller
to drive a Mars motor, this is the first step: test with a controller mounting the original mosfets
and reduced voltage ....

Controller is dead cold either during no load running and after repeated accelerations.

Motor is rotating smooth, no particular noise, acceleration is strong
when taking care of keeping fix the motor to avoid ripping all the cables

Not seen in the picture is the lab supply feeding the system: the 2 SLA batteries act as
a convenient current peak buffer.

Of course with just 24V supply the top motor speed is reduced ....

Indeed now I have to find those big IXYS mosfets, modify slightly the supply part of the controller
to accept around 60V

For what it's worth, they list dealers in Dennmark, Switzerland and Sweden: http://www.motenergy.com/mode.html

Hi Everyone - I thought I would share an unfortunate event regarding my ME0913 as to hopefully keep someone else from doing the same

I have been running my ME0913 for over a year now on a hybrid that I built. It has been a great motor and performs very well. I unfortunately modified the cooling system and then drove 30 fast / hilly miles at high amps. The motor is now cooked!! Images are attached.

Anyone need a toasted motor or know how to fix this?

Good luck!

Hi ncwa,

I am interested in a toasted ME0913, as long as the magnets are not demagnetized. Does not matter if the wires/coils are bad.

Sent you an email. FYI.

Hi guys,

where can I get sprockets (520 chain) or sprocket holder that fits on ME913 shaft?

Thanks :D
