Electric Motors and Controllers

Oh, well most certainly. I am not creating controller heat in my motor. Take the controller out and you will find the 'pie to have robust heat shedding capabilities. It has to ... :)

I've got it warm once, running 30-32mph up a pretty good grade for a few miles on 120% mode ( very inefficient ) and not pedaling. It cools off real quick. Unlike the typical 9C/MXUS size motor, which can stay hot for a long period of time.

The all-arounder: 8T MAC motor on a Trek 4500.
The girlfriend bike: 350W front MAC on a 700c Trek.
The wheelie machine: 20" Rear Magic Pie II on a Trek 4300 MTB
The Bus: ??? on a 'da bomb' cargo bike frame

Pro-tips for noobs: Avoid BMS Battery like the plague | Charge RC Lipos to 4.15v, stop discharging at 3.5-3.6v | Use torque plates/arms! | Rear mounted hubs are always best

@o00scorpion00o - Yeah I am going disassemble my large display CA from Tidalforce ebike and install on Yuba to test MPIII motor. The headway battery pack's BMS can only given 35A max (Dave is right unless I double parallel more ampere but grossly battery pack weight). It doesn't mean headway battery pack is best BUT it is very good battery pack easy play and plug-in for my girlfriend. I probhit using LiPo battery pack for my girlfriend. She is not experience rider.

I would love boost more voltage on headway battery pack however it will not enough room due 2 girls haul on cargo bike.

Reason, I barked this thread because in future soon, We are in saving money for the down payment on first time buyer house for ourselves and Where we will move in the area will have some hilly (8-10% grade). I concerned about the MPIII's performance limitation and I am talking about commute 2 girls 7 and 8 years old weighted 55lbs and 62% + my girlfriend 135lbs combine heavy load on Yuba haul to the school. Where the school place has bit hilly about 4-5% grade (My estimate).

@neptronix - Yeah yeah yeah............... so my Lyen controller doesn't heat up either.....Again I was talking about MPIII internal controller created super HOT.      One day if you attend the events somewhere in california someday (Never know?) and I'll let you ride my Yuba cargo bike and see yourself how the MPIII performance.

I doubt the pie III controller is causing much if any heat, it seems very well vented!

If I were you I would take out the internal controller and rewire for a 18 fet Lyen, I think the 18 fet is good to 60 amps ? Maybe he can beef it up for 80 amps, I would do that. But I don't think the pie could take that, continuously but once up to the speed the pie draws a lot less power, but 13+ grades with a heavy bike carrying more than 1 is going to be tough on any motor.

Perhaps try a dual pie setup, but you defiantly need more current to the pie 1500 watts is not a lot for a cargo bike, especially carrying more than 1.
Back to pedal only power.

@o00scorpion00o - You got good point, good idea remove the MPIII internal controller and it really easy convert to an 3rd party controller. When we move to new house, I probably will force remove the MPIII internal controller and install new phase wiring to the external controller.

Just wanted you all guys know MPIII internal controller isnt great if you live on hilly. Just get CroMotor or HT40 or 10T MAC geared hub motor.

Hi
i recently assembled a Magic Pie 111 kit on my mountain bike using the Golden Motor 10amp battery pack (LFP4810s-LT), does anyone know how many amps these batterys can be charged at? the charger that came with the pack is very slow

Also the programming software is a shocker, has anyone written someting better?

Cheers

The battery packs from GM are a bit - ordinary. I wouldn't be trying to charge it at over 5A (0.5c) for longevity myself.

Also - welcome to another novocastrian...
New evil decided - GNG offroad build on Craftworks DHR with 12S4P lipo. Aim - Light, balanced, powerful, able to climb a tree.
Project Vectrix restarted. Status - BMS + Charge control redesign (read faffing with batteries again)

Been running Dual Magic Pie II's for over a year now. Been using 48V and cruise at 27MPH. Used a larger front sproket off another bike so I can pedal with the bike. I climb 400 feet going home every day and this baby can climb. I had thermal cut out climbing a mountain in the East County(San Diego) it was a hot day, just let her cool and was off riding again. Made it home no problem. I have replaced each of the internal controllers over time @ $100 :(. Only run the front for regen, it stops pretty hard with both. Took my nine year old son to Sea World 19 mi each way, great way to see town. Highly recommend XTRACYCLE! Great for groceries/errands. I like the improvements in the III, would be great if my II's ran forever and never needed the III, time will tell. Brian

Can anyone explain how hook up an external controller to this motor?

Thanks!
