ME1016 PM Generator

I found this http://www.motenergy.com/mepmge.html Its a 3 phase generator for $150, it claims 1000 watts at 12 volts up to 3000 watts at 36 volts.

So I am wondering if this could be turned in to a brushless motor, by adding hall sensors, or would this more trouble than it worth.

As a WAG that fan looks like it would suck up a lot of energy. If the magnets need that much cooling you might not want to take a chance on them.

"This is a new Permanent Magnet Generator for use in Water Generation Projects. It is rated at 1000 watts at 1000 rpm, and up to 3000 watts at 3000 rpm. Motenergy Part Number ME1016.

The product has a stainless steel shaft and an aluminum hub that is designed to fit the Motenergy ME0903 Pelton Water Wheel, or the Motenergy ME1113 Turgo Wheel. The output is 3-phase, Y-connected AC, and it can be converted to DC with the use of a Charge Controller or 3-phase Bridge Rectifier.

The output is set for over 50 amps AC per phase, which means you can get 80 amps DC from a 3-phase bridge rectifier. This is a continuous 80 Amps DC (with Bridge Rectifier connected), 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Some other manufacturers of PMA Generators list higher amps output but it is only for 2-5 minutes before they overheat.

The voltage is set to provide 12 VDC at 1000 rpm and 1000 watts. At 3000 rpm, you will get 36 VDC and 3000 watts. The fan works best when the generator is run in the Clockwise direction, looking at the shaft.

It has very little cogging torque which means it will provide power with very little water pressure. The magnets are Ceramic and can run at very high temperatures, unlike Neodynium magnets that are only rated for 300-350 F.. This is an air-cooled generator.

There is a water seal on the shaft, and the mounting face has plenty of area to put a gasket or RTV sealant. Note that this is an Outer-Rotor design. The shaft and outer-rotor spins, and the center stator (coils) remains stationary. The generator diameter is 204 mm (about 8 inchs). It can be mounted with 4 bolts, 5/16-18 on a 3.75 inch bolt circle.

This generator can also be used for wind turbine projects.

The Pelton Wheel is not part of this auction and it is not sold with this generator. The Pelton Wheel ME0903 is mounted to the generator by 4 M5 bolts (not included). There is a separate eBay listing for the wheels. This Generator can be used for other projects due to the low cost."

Thanks for the good advice, $150 saved.

Still looking for that cheap 2000 watt motor, that seems to crop up once in a while, but to no avail, aside from the BMC at $400 from superkids
