Working with Lamination Steel

Hi all, I'm completely new to this so please bear with me.

If I were to get some laminations cut for me by a 'laser' guy I know would any burrs produced be a problem? If I was to remove these burrs with, say, a file would the bare metal then need to be coated with an insulating varnish or something?

No, insulating the edges is not necessary but you would want to paint it to prevent rust.

I say it depends on what you are using the laminations for. Are you building a motor? A transformer?

What are you making?

These would be for building up the stator of a pm type alternator/generator.

Then my answer would be, yes de-burr the cut laminates if they are ruff. You don't want to scratch any enamel off of your winding. A print shop burnishing tool might be useful. So would a Dremel tool.

Also, you may not need to do anything to the edges if the cuts are well done.

Ideally you don't want any electrical contact between the laminations, but in many things I've torn apart, they don't seem to be too careful about this, especially if it's away from the windings. My guess is a little contact here and there isn't significant. It will make the most difference where the magnetic flux is changing the most, like in the stator teeth.
