I just hook them over a ruler, which is the way I have heard from all other bicycle mechanics. From the inside of the elbow on the head. This is also how the spokes come measured from Sapim. Hook them over a ruler and it is dead nuts what they are labeled. It doesn't make more than a mm difference, not enough to throw a build off unless the spokes are already way off.

Spokecalc probably measures from the center of the spoke head, but I've never noticed a difference enough to catch my attention.

Spoke rulers make measuring slightly faster, but will give a similar result to the way JRH describes:

Image

Spoke is measured from the inside of the bend, see another ruler here:

I see the zero starts at the bend of the spoke on those rulers too, so hooking it over a ruler seems acceptable.

My site calculates all the costs, please use it for me.

I have a stack of PMs here and have been slammed with work. Orders for spokes are going out as normal, but I don't have the time for helping on this forum at the moment. My apologies! Once I get caught back up on orders I will do my best to help out here again, but until then I won't be around much and I can't calculate spoke lengths for you. It just takes more time than I have right now. I suggest using the calculator on Ebike.ca 's website, it works extremely well.

Thanks for the interest, I'll try to be back around as soon as possible!

Jrh,

DUDE. I'm gonna lose it when it arrives at my door!!! I'm so beyond amped right now!!!! I just got my 18fet controller back from Lyen too! I'll have to mess around with the settings so I don't kill myself. That wheel build looks ridiculous!!! It's gonna put my 5404 with its cheap rim to shame!!!! The wheel should also fit nicely in my new swingarm(hopefully). All around EXTREMELY satisfied with the build and I don't even have it yet!!!! Thanks john! You are AWESOME.

Thanks John!

After the next wheelset I have in build I am taking a break from wheels for a few months. I am title sponsoring the Nationals Rock Crawling event in September that needs a lot of attention, and I need to build some wheels for myself!

We will still keep our spoke machine running as normal. Thanks for the orders!

Hi John
I need some alloy 17"x140 rims, and am considering the pro wheel alloy 17"x140 model for drz 125/klx125, what is the difference in weight to a moped alloy 17"x140.
Are there any members who have used the pro wheel and what is the rim weight, cant find the answer.

EDIT: finally found the answer 2lb rim only.

I'll post here incase others are interested. I am rebuilding an old electric stingray for the boy. It has a 20", 4" wide rear tire. I am going to use my 5404 so I want a beefier wheel. I got a 110/70 16" kenda cruiser front tire. A 2.5" x 16" rim. It's perfect. I am looking for spokes and nipples now. The rim spoke holes are .280". Will your oversized nipples work? Do you know if 11g or even 10g spokes will fit in the 5404? Thanks, -Damcard

Wow, I've seen pictures of John, but he had a shirt on so I thought his nipples were normal-sized.

I think if you work John's nipples real gentle with your fingers, they will form into whatever size you desire.

Hi I need some spokes for my ebike and understand that you are the man for the job. I would prefer black spokes, but apart from that I have no idea. What gauge do I go for etc? If you have a tip on how to avoid the bend at the nipples on the back wheel that would also be grate. I do not think the rim with the motor needs to be dished.

I have two large marge rims (none offset), a 5404 motor and a Dimension Freewheel Single Speed Hub 135mm for the front(fatbike..).

135mm front hub - http://www.universalcycles.com/shopping ... egory=3557
large marge - http://www.kstoerz.com/freespoke/rim/15
5404 motor - viewtopic.php?f=2&t=44620&start=15

Btw, I could not get past "Type the characters you see in the picture" on the contact page in your website.

I appreciate the help.

there is no way to avoid the bend at the nipple with your parts combination unless you drill the rim. Even then there will be some bending. 12ga spokes make the most sense for the hub. 14ga spokes make the most sense for the rim. Any way you slice it, its a mutt wheel that isn't going to be perfect.

Bottom of the page, a wheel I built just like you describe http://www.holmeshobbies.com/blog/?page_id=212

I'm going to do the work myself so I just need the spokes, preferably black. If you say I should install some washers somewhere or something I will, drill the rim, whatever you would have done. I want the wheel to be perfect :D and I will not blame you if it goes crap.
Give me a shout If you want some more information or something. I want spokes for both wheel. Pay with paypal if that is ok.

Washers are not a good idea, except under the spoke heads at the hub if you were to use 12ga spokes. Use loctite on the nipples so the wheel doesn't come loose over time. Not perfect, but the least likely to break spokes at least.
