Thanks Mark for your feedback. After speaking with the manufacturer these steel gears are still relatively new and have received quite positive response from the buyers so far but in future I will likely supply the motors fitted with the standard plastic gears and supply an additional single steel gear if requested. I'll try to get some spare gears and assemblies soon but I don't know exact prices yet.

To be perfectly honest the levels you are pushing the motor to is pushing the limits a bit for any geared hub motor and you may have to wind it back a bit to maintain reasonable reliability. Maybe a dual motor setup would give you the performance you are after without pushing the limits. It doesn't necessarily have to be a pair of Puma motors. There are other smaller motors such as some of the bigger cute Ananda motors that might be nice in a dual motor setup.

Hi Kevin,

Shipping to USA is gonna be 80USD by EMS and should arrive very quickly. Sea freight can be had for less than 30USD but it can take a looooong time. Paypal unfortunately adds 6%, so 254USD total by EMS and should arrive within 1 week. I'm trying to find better shipping deals as anything not batteries should be a bit easier to ship so I can shop around a bit more, but that's what I can offer ATM. For some countries I can get good Air Freight Rates but for USA it's not so good.

Cheers
Paul

Thanks for the shipping quote Paul. Any ideas long does the sea freight actually takes? Are the 350w motors smaller than the 500w in diameter or do they have the same physical dimensions? If they're smaller, I may be interested in a Puma front/rear disc pair. Otherwise, I may be interested in a Puma 500w disc rear. Are you selling cute motors yet? Got any front bafangs?

Sorry for so many questions on here instead of PM, but I figured it might help others who may have similar questions. The Pumas look like a very cost effective alternative to the BMC's and I like the fact there's the option of a steel gear.

Hi Kevin,

the sea freight can really vary from my experience. It's luck of the draw. As far as I know the sea freight would be consolidated so it might arrive in less than a month or it could take 2 months if the parcel misses the boat.

The rear 350W and 500W motors use identical cases but the front 350W (with disk) case is different to the 500W (no disk), but all have the same spoke radius of 172mm. Below is the outline for the different cases. Bear in mind the 350W is a slower winding with about 300rpm at 36V compared to the 500W which is 365rpm at 36V.

The jury is still out on the steel gear so if I send out any motors from now I'll be sending nylon gears unless otherwise requested but will throw in a spare steel while available or spare nylon if steel is fitted.

Sorry no Bafangs or Cutes at the moment but hopefully in the future I can start to offer a much wider range of products. I've got so bogged down in the cell stuff, so I'm not getting as much done in other areas as I would have liked.

I'm kind of surprised that these motors aren't going at these prices when there are virtually identical motors selling for a whole lot more. I've used these motors for months and I'm not babying them. They are a great performing motor and if you stick to less than about 1500W max power are very reliable. If you exceed that and don't have some mechanical sympathy for the gears, you are liable to strip them sooner rather than later. However, the gears in these motors do not turn to mush like many hub motors, they just tend to loose a couple of teeth. The reason being, these motors just do not get very hot.

I'll throw in a free set of 3pcs of nylon gears (with circlips) and cover the paypal commission if you pay the equivent total in HK$ as this saves me the exchange commission I have to pay when I receive in USD. If anybody is brave enough to try the dual high RPM setup I've been running for the last couple I'll cut you a bit of a deal too :) I managed a genuine 67kph on the flat today, no wind with this setup running off of 16S of A123 with approx 65A max controller current between the 2 motors. The phase wires do not get more than warm running this power for extended periods IME. I sell the replacement parts very cheap so if you do have a problem it will not be particularly expensive to resolve :)

i am sure many pps want it, i know i do, but this motor is like an upgrade from a DD, the 1st day you offered them i wanted 1, but my plan was to try firstly a DD motor the clyte, and after that to move on to geared.
eventually it's good to have both kinds and just replace wheels on the type of ride you plan for the day.

The big Crystallyte motors are big strong beasts but you'll need plenty of battery and controller to get the best out of them. If you just want something that will give you 45-50khp with great torque, running moderate amps at 48V, a bigger geared motor like the Mac is well worth a try. If you keep the volts to 48V and current below about 30A it will give you a good performance and be reliable. Go much above that and expect to change the odd nylon gear out. I've now added a bit more solder to the shunts on my bike and am pulling 90A max (110A peak according to the CA) with my dual motors. It absolutely flies and is up to 60kph in no time. I've now had to develop a special stance to avoid massive front wheel wheelspin when nailing it from low speeds. The bike is just kind of crazy now. Wonder what 60V will do :) Still running standard motors except they are high speed windings, front motor is all nylon gears, rear is running a single steel gear.

yup you are right, i should'v mentioned i meant clyte 4x, wont go to the monastery 5x, my eyes start watering above 30kph so 30-40 is enough with seldom kicks to 50, exactly in the range of puma.

damn i should'v ordered from you a month ago as idea crossed my mind by sea freight to save on shipping and have it with me NOW so now i wouldnt still think to wait for a response from kenny or count another month till it gets to me if i order puma this week.
sneaky sneaky life  i was sold to your motor at first post, by then i'v red about geared BMC ezee bafang and puma, thats a crazy ass price 160$ !

if kenny wont answer soon i'l execute plan b.

The only options at the moment are Paypal or direct wire transfer to my HK business account I'm afraid. The Paypal account is also tied into my registered HK company, I just happen to use a Hotmail account as the registered email address. I have been supplying stuff on ES for a few months now and there hasn't been any bad reports so far. I'm not hear to rip anyone off, this is a long term thing for me. I do hope to get on top of the whole website thing soon, but I've been very busy even without that. I just need to get a few things out of the way and then I hope to have a much wider range of products on offer, with a proper website and facilities to accept CCs.

Let me know how you get on. I've been told there are some new gears coming along that are supposed to be stronger than the nylon gears. No details yet but I should have some next week and will be ensuring they get some torture testing by me and others.

Those would be the delrin / kevlar composit material, a real step up from the nylon... good for another 50C and a bunch more torque.

When you have those gears available please let us know, I would like to order a rear puma with those gears available for testing = )_

Hi Mike,

I haven't got any details yet. It was just a very brief email from Mac yesterday to say they had got some alternative gears and wanted to try them out. I should know more this coming week and will put up details as they become available.

Hi Doc,

I have some Cute motors but they are mostly front motors. The rears have a rather wide dropout and I don't think they are with the helical gear also or suited for 20" rim. Sorry I can't help at this time.

Dear Cell_man, I'm interested in a rear version, if possible that can use disc brakes and 6 or 7 gears in a custom frame (i.e., normal dropout space of a AL frame). I want to run with LIPO 44.4v in a lyen controller, if possible. What's your options for that?
Thanks,
Fabio

EDIT: I'm in Brazil, and prefer that you send me through official China air mail - the customs dutys becomes better here in this way. Please include on the price an aditional set of gears.
