Here is a light I saw on another moped forum. DX special http://www.dealextreme.com/p/10w-800-lu ... 26v-101461

I hear the beam is funky and square, but for that price it is hard to beat.

Yes, that is a nice little lamp, but to run that on the gf's bike I would need to run a dc-dc.., like the Cycle Luminator has
Mongoose frame, Fox F100 forks,26x2.3 tyres
180mm disks
100V 20Ah LiPo
Lyen 18 FET 65 Amp,5304 in 26 inch Mavic rim

To illustrate the vain conceit that the universe must be somehow pre-ordained for us, because we are so well-suited to live in it, he mimed a wonderfully funny imitation of a puddle of water, fitting itself snugly into a depression in the ground, the depression uncannily being exactly the same shape as the puddle."

The optic is focussing the LED die into the pattern. That type of design is usually low in efficiency due to the lost beam coming from the LED at angles wider than the optic. Their quoted output is probably die lumens, the actual output will likely be far less.

The TIR optics on the Lumenator, or the lamp that is the subject of this thread are generally more efficient as they capture all the output from the LED and reflect it internally very efficiently. Also the high voltage converters on these lights are helpful if you don't have 12V available on the bike.

It would be interesting to see a side by side beamshot to verify this.

FYI geoman gear has the 1000 lm magic shine on sale this month -- it's better IMO because it ships from the US.

That's a good idea, can't wait this light to be properly compared to other known lamps. It's still not warm enough here to ride during the night, but soon it will be, and I'm very interested to see how this light stacks up against single LED P7 and XM-Ls.

Do you know if it will work with a remote switch or you always have to cycle the button on the light itself ? Also, what are the power requirements ?

When it's plugged in it by default comes on high, without buttons, so depending on what you want to do a switch would work. I think it takes about 15w, but don't quote me on that. I have one, and now a second on the way.

Good, since I have a remote switch on my recumbent bike. One more question - is it relatively white or has the bluish tint ?

It's definitely white, but there is a bluish hue to it.. not cool white, definitely not warm white.

Not sure we are talking about the same light. I just got the MJ-808E XML head from geomangear and it does not "remember" the power setting and always comes in the "off" state when plugged in. The remote switch is not an option.
Few notes for those considering it:
- It takes 0.8A on full at 12.5V, there are 3 levels of brightness and no blinker.
- It has a clearly defined round spot (a bit small to my taste, I am used to flood beam) and rather weak flood area.
- The color in the spot is a pleasant white (warmer than my trailtech HID) with no blue tint (if anything there is a very slight greenish tint to it). There is some blue tint in the flood area but not in the spot.
- Mounting may be a problem for some, the light does not pivot and sits very close to the handlebar (uses rubber rings instead of a usual clamp). It may interfere with the cabling because of proximity to the handlebar (it does on our bikeE recumbent had to move things around to mount it).

So do one of these lights start in the ON position? I have my current halogen lights and tail lights rigged up with a simple spst switch to my 12v dc-dc. I like this simplicity.

The one i have also has a 12v rear LED light tapped into it running off the same voltage dropper, then i connected another front led light to switch alternately to act as a low beam with the ebay light as my high beam, this showed up another problem, when i am switched to low beam with the front and rear led's on but the ebay light off the current draw on the voltage dropper is too low to pull the voltage down, i was measuring 50v output  which blew my led's :( so i am going to remove the dropper and put mine on a 3s battery. I will let you know if this makes a difference to the brightness as it will then be able to pull all the current it wants. The dropper was being fed from 18s 75v and appears to be a very poor excuse for a dc dc converter.

Simon.

Simon, the dropper is not at fault. It was already discussed in this thread that it is NOT voltage stabilized, instead it holds stable current to drive the leds it was designed to work with. Since your small leds were too weak to receive such current at 12V, the dropper was increasing the voltage to increase the current until the leds died a quick death. To drive your small leds you will need a 12v stabilized supply, usually a cheap switched wall supply with 300mA or even lower output will do the job.

Hi, I'm really sorry - I didn't mean to lead you astray. I received my magic-shine 1000 lumen light from geoman gear in September 2011, and it DOES come on high on being plugged in. Something must have changed since then with a newer or different model. If you don't want it and can't return it, I might be able to buy it from you.

Don't worry, I'll find the use for both units that I got :). One goes on my wife's bikeE and does not need a remote switch. For the other unit I'll figure out something. I actually do like the color temperature of this light (in the main spot). Many other LED lights I've seen produce bluish tint (or just very cold white beam) that makes things look ghostly and unnatural. This one is noticeably warmer and has some very slight green tint which makes grass and foliage look nice at night :)

Can anyone confirm this light works off the aux off the CA. Looking to keep it simple and if I can wire the light up to the CA that would be great. Mines a CA-DP.

Did anyone test it's water resistance? The ebay ad states you need to waterproof it. I'd hate to get caught in rain and kill the light.

FYI, it's on ebay again for $33.99

I measured 80V (pack voltage) from the aux jack (which I have on my large screen CA, but do not see documentation for, except as an upgrade on in the store:

And since someone cited that it draws 10W, seems like it would work! I'm going to go for it.

I measured the current draw on mine at under 0.14 amp at 74v, the CA states that upto 500ma can be drawn off the pack voltage wire in the CA so yes you should be able to run it from there.
