Chev Volt + Australia = FAIL !

When the Volt finally arrives in Oz it will cost Au$60+k !
That is 3x the cost of the Cruze that it is based on. some premium for a "hybrid" cage.
With Taxes, dealer charges, and " other on road " costs that will push it closer to $70k in US dollars.
you would have to keep it a long time to recover those additional dollars over the $21k Cruze ICE.

I get the impression that GM are not serious about the electric program

Same here guys, way too expensive.

The auto industry in the us is heavily subsidised, not forgetting the billions of tax payers hard earned to bail out GM for the big mistakes they made in the past!

The tax here is the biggest killer.

But for the life of me I can't understand why they made it? Afaik the leaf sales top the volt.

The volts drivetrain is too complicated and unnecessary. Most people drive less than 50 miles a day. Nissan has calculated from the communications system in the leafs that most leaf owners drive 30 miles a day or less!

Even renaults fluence is a fraction of the cost.

If you ask me the volt i s a very expensive over complicated car for to give people piece of mind that they can make that rare 200 mile journey!

Now the tesla model s! Oh yeah that's a car I would buy over a German car any day without doubt!!!!!

What's most importand is faster charge times that doesnt effect the life of the battery rather than a big heavy expensive battery, Nissan have 10 min charging and induction charging already, but we might not have that until gen II leaf at least.

Even the Leaf is going to be a RRP of $51,500 when it's released here in Oz :(

GM could probably have built the volt with 150 mile range to compete against the Leaf for the same money.

If the Leaf is suitable for 80-90 % of the population why would people pay so much more for the volt ? Why would I pay 15,000 Euro's or more for a car that I would rarely need the range extender when I can drive to the nearest fast charger ?

For the extra 10-20% of people, I guess they will be mainly business users who will benefit from tax breaks, and will rarely plug in at home and just use petrol all the time!

With respect to people just using the petrol-->the volt is pretty noticeably worse driving in the gas engine. Very whiny and weak motor.
Very nice with electric though :).

That said, I wouldn't buy such an expensive car. I have just ridden it a few times using a car-sharing program (like zip-car. "wecar.")
New to endless-sphere? Notice a lot of signatures recommending Ebike.ca? That's because it's the best place for a quality and manageable, (but still 'real'), first build. Justin is a solid supporter of electric bike development, and a good source of equipment.

Now you know what us poor Europeans had to put up with for decades ? Shit engines of about 55-100 hp!

That engine came from Germany, it was designed There in GM's Opel. I'm not sure if they build them in Michigan or ship them ?

But those 1.4l engines are very common in Europe, imagine that! :(

Haha :). Yeah, on the bright side you haven't f*cked the world as much [minus the 400 years in which you did]. My interest in electric is, in part, so that once I start buying cars by choice* (rather than mooching off ancient family cars) I can get some power without poor efficiency.

P.S, Mazda Miata 92 is pretty nice with, what, 80 hp? But, yeah, it's not like a big V8 :D. [shit, the miata is actually maybe 120hp.]

*Who am I kidding? Never going to get there.

Actually i think even the base model had 115bhp ! .. and if you can find one of the rare SP Turbo versions they are 220bhp.

..but yes, they still dont "rumble" like a V8

Since when did car prices in Oz make any sense !!
Have you ever noticed the difference between the cost of (example) a Porche 911 in USA and Oz ?
They are more than double the cost here !... likewise for many other " international " brands.
Also its very suspicious how cars of the same class ( Commodore and Falcon for example) , always seem to be priced within a few $$$'s of each other ?
We are being rolled big time on car prices !
