The world premiere of the Taiwanese electric car company, Thunder Power, occurred today at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The company claims the rear-drive Thunder Power Sedan can deliver a range of at least 404 miles (650 km.) on a full charge. It is run by a 125 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and drivers will be able to choose between 230 kW(308 bhp) or 320 kW (430 bhp) versions. By comparison, the Tesla Model S 70D utilizes an 70 kWh battery that makes 329 bhp with a range of 240 miles.
According to Thunder Power, the 320 kWh version will spring from 0-62 mph in less than five seconds and top out at 155 mph. Six hours is what the Thunder Power needs for a full charge with the standard charging system, and just one hour from the fast charging mode.
Now. Let's discuss the looks.
The Sedan was designed by Zagato, the Italian design house known for its work with Aston Martin, which would typically bode well. The eye is immediately drawn to the Spyker C8 Aileron-looking front grille, which the company claims is an icon in the making. But unlike the Spyker, the Sedan seems clumsily hewn together and possesses many bloated and blank body panels, like something that was left in the water for too long.
Thunder Power unabashedly informs us that the Sedan chassis design is flexible, which allows it to be adapted into SUV, compact, and crossover versions—a full range of these cars, if you will. Hopefully the chassis application across different variants will edge out the fishy looks through natural selection.
This Thunder Power range (which doesn't exist yet) will see a European launch in 2017, followed by one in China in 2018. The U.S. is last to come, and pricing is yet to be announced.
Also appearing at the show was an all-wheel-drive race variation, which very much exists in the ether of possibility as well, should Thunder Power decide to take up racing.
