Scooter with new motor stopping intermittently

Postby jotto » Tue Jul 03, 2012 8:19 am

I have a Razor E300 running on 12S lipo where I have this controller:

http://tncscooters.com/index.php?route= ... uct_id=177

It worked fine, but I eventually smoked the poor 24V motor. Now I have upgraded to this motor:

http://tncscooters.com/index.php?route= ... uct_id=332

That works great, but the motor is stopping intermittently when going uphill. It stops for like a second and then continues again. Why does this happen? Is it overcurrent protection? According to my logger, I don't draw more current than before, though. I have peaks of 30A.

I thought the overcurrent protection completely shut down the controller, though. That happened now and then with the old motor, and I had to reconnect the battery.

I once had a brushed controller that used to do the same, when it was running at its peak current for 10 seconds - it cuts, then I had to release the throttle and it came back on. I think this motor is drawing more power than your previous motor, this way, going uphill you stay at the max current more time. what I did to overcome this was to release the throttle for a very short momemnt every ~9 seconds and the controller stopped cutting. eventully I replaced the motor + controller to a brushless RC outrunner :)

Ok, sounds like the problem I have then. Thanks!

I'm wondering if upgrading the controller to a 48V one works.

There might be an internal protection not to allow max amp draw for too long, because it assumes there's a stall. Or, there might be thermal overheat protection. I'd guess the former. Some of the scooters have weird regulation mechanisms.

Don't take my word here though, I hope someone with actual experience with your controller can give feedback.
New to endless-sphere? Notice a lot of signatures recommending Ebike.ca? That's because it's the best place for a quality and manageable, (but still 'real'), first build. Justin is a solid supporter of electric bike development, and a good source of equipment.

My hat off a thousand times to the green people that effectively run this forum. The ES Mods are superb.

I'm going to order a new controller that can handle a higher amp draw and higher voltage. Any suggestions?

Can this controller: http://tncscooters.com/index.php?route= ... uct_id=187

be used with this throttle: http://tncscooters.com/index.php?route= ... duct_id=85 ?

(edit) or this one: http://tncscooters.com/index.php?route= ... uct_id=185

The controller has three-pin connector, while the throttle has five. I'm not sure if the two extra pins are used for the battery indicator lights.

Shipping from tncscooters costs $62. Are there any other good places to order from?
