How is it 15lbs lighter? A Sky 100 motor makes 18hp, which is 1 more than the electric is rated for, and weighs 13kg. The frame is 5.5kg, plus gas tank and fuel, say 4kg. That's 22.5kg, plus net and prop. Not far off the quoted weight of 22kg for the electric, and with 9L of fuel, the Sky 100 will still be flying long after the electric has landed for charging.

i also dont think that i would be lighter..
the motor for itself, yes
but the batteries..

a gas-powered engine will (for the next years) always fly longer..

its the same with cars..

look at a electric car..
replace the 300-400kg batterie (which is needed to go 400km with one charge)

with a fuel-tank with can keep 300-400liter of gas
=> and you will have a car, that goes for 7000km or more

there is so much more energie stored in gas than in any lithium batterie, that it overcomes the benefits of better efficience of an electric-motor over a gas-engine by far..

nevertheless: when you fly this electric paraglider, it think you don´t do it to safe weight, or fly long..

its for flying quiet, and its also for DOING it electric..

its the first, comercial sold electric soarer/glider on the world...

with superb performance !




some data:
42 kW power
216Nm torque !! (with direct drive)

it climbs with 4.4m/s !!! in the beginning
and reaches over 3000m of height with one charge !

when you considere that 3000m are enough to glide ~150km (without thermic) .. impressive !

the best: its quieter than any other motorized plane/glider around (big, slow turning prop - spins only with 1500rpm)

the batteries have a life (100% discharge down to 20% at each cycles) of 1500cycles..

with that you can make 3.6millions of meters height..
or in other words: flying a horizontal distance of 228.000km !
(6 times around the world)



of course, when motor is off, the prop goes inside the fuslage:

Agreed, I just hate it when they have to distort the truth to try and make the electrics look better than what they really are. Practical electric flight is going to take an order of magnitude improvement in batteries to be worthwhile. 17hp at 90% efficiency for 35 minutes would take 74kg of LiFe batteries...

Yes, a lot of the time is spent gliding and catching air currents, much like the sailplane with the 42kW motor.

.. the model is powered by a outrunner (you can call it "hub-motor") and light lipos..


to compare:

4s2p Thunderpower with 4000mAh weight 320g

14.8V * 4Ah = 59.2Wh / 0.32kg ====> 185Wh/kg

5s1p A123 Fepo4 with 2300mAh weight 355g

16.5V * 2.3Ah = 37.95Wh / 0.355 ====> 107Wh/kg

to ad for the 4s2p Thunderpower video in my signature:

this batts are 2years old... so only 12C-cells...
in the video the peak-power this 320g pack has to give are arount 1000Watt

meahwhile there are 30C cells on the market,
and people fly the same heli, with same weight with peaks of up to 1800Watt which is realy insane (power/weight-rating of over 1000Watt/kg)

I just checked the price of the TP Prolite packs. 18.5v 6Ah, 627 grams, but $329 $4935 to replace my NiMH
On the plus side, 23kg of NiMH would become 9.4kg of lipo.

ANND: don´t expect them, to get much older than 100-150cycles and 2-3years (at least at currents i use)

to be fair:
the pack costed me ~160US$

but: i have also paid 90 US$ for a twice as heavy NiMh-pack for that heli.. (12cells, 3300mah)
and this pack lost punsh after 40cycles and was useless (too high inner-restistance) after 3 years as well..

so in this rc-heli-application the lipos are far better:
costs (over the cycles) less,
have about same power,
but weight only half weight
and offer more capacity
handling is also easier than with NiMh

the TP1320 is - i think - the battery (with more than 10C capability) with most Wh/kg
(in the 190Wh/kg region)

other cells are much heavier..
for example Kokam 1250mAh..
also it has 100mAh less rated mah inside its more heavy..

result: only 140Wh/kg

wondering that there are Hornets still flying..
it seems to me, that the T-Rex450 has "killed" somehow the market for the Hornet-typ fliers..

Most powered paragliders run on 2 stroke motors. This gives them a small but poweraful engine to produce thrust. 2 stroke motors can be tempermental, and require regular overhauls.
An electric paramotor may be best suited for pilots willing to trade shorter flights for a simpler and hopefully lower maintenance engine. Prop noise accounts for most of the sound produced by paramotors so electric paramotors are not really that quiet.
