Xyster's Top-6 list of all-time most useful inventions:

1)Fire
2)Electricity
3)Vise Grips
4)Duct Tape
5)Crazy Glue
6)Hose Clamps

What's on your list?

Condoms. 8)

I thought about that, but duct tape and a hose clamp can be made to serve the same purpose, so they're more fundamentally important. :)

Oh yes, that's a good one that can't simply be fashioned from, or performed by some combination of the others -- so is the wheel and the knife.

1)Fire
2)The Wheel
3)Electricity
4)Medicine
5)Vise Grips
6)Duct Tape
7)Crazy Glue
8)Hose Clamps
9)X-acto Knife

What other basic tools and building blocks, general or specific, should go into a McGyver-certified, apocalypse-tomorrow survival kit...?

Whether all-time inventions or survival, soap is a good thing to have. You might be able to make it using the above.

Toilet paper is good too, but if you have soap, you can get by using leaves or grass.

Electric Light
Bicycle
Hub Motors
Computers
MONEY$

P.S fire??? was that invented or discovered ?

Fire was discovered. Later, fire was harnessed. Some time following that, fire was re-created on demand. The inventions were the harness (a wood torch perhaps), and the means of re-production (a flint maybe), not the fire itself. But isn't it easier to abbreviate? :)

Utilizing the same criteria for not including the condom, you can also create fire from electricity.

And by abusing lithium batteries

I guess should add the DMM here... electricity is tricky if you can't tell what it's doing.

Also should mention the multi-tool. Various makers like Leatherman, Gerber, Sheffield and a host of lame knockoffs. One good multi-tool could replace a handfull of stuff on the list. So far my fav has been the Gerber 600 with the one-hand pliers:

The towel.

You can use it as a turnicit or to impbalize broken bones in the form of a splint, replacing both medicine and duct tape from the list.

You can use it to tie around a hose, replacing a hose clamp from the list.

Put a rock in the center of a twoel, then grasp the ends and swing it as an efective weapon, both as a sling, and a club, replacing the knife from the list.

it will keep you warm, so there's no need for electricity. and if you require fire, rub two towls together vigorously.

The wheel, a totaly unnecessary invention. Life only gets more complicated when you can more about more freely. instead, take a nice warm bath at the end of your long journey, and dry off with a Towel.

Crazyglue. No, a towel won't replace crazy glue, however, if you happen yo glue your hands together, you can hide your shame from the world under a towel.

if you scrub with a towel while in the bath, you don't need soap as the fibers work well as an exfoliant. Soap is merely an enhanser, and unnessary to the process.

That leaves Vicegrips, and seeds. The Towel can't replace either, but a good towel, propperly used can enhance the use of both.

:D

With his Total Towel Theory, Drunkskunk is definitely living up to the first word of his name. :D

Barring all the things that weren't technically invented, because that argument can be taken to the fullest extent of "we're all God reincarnate" for religious folks and "we're all vibrating matter" for science heads... let's just call this the-top-of-my-omg-imagine-the-world-without list (can I start abbreviating now?)

  • DC, including batteries & generators
    AC, including generators
    PCS&INTARNETS&CALCULATORS
    Solar Panels
    Copper
    Fire
    Magnets
    Sharp Objects
    Elastic Objects
    Lubricants, including condoms ;)

And of course... don't forget to bring a towel!

And which in your list do you use the "Lubricants, including condoms" with?
