If it leaks oil it will leak air. So you will never be able to pull a vacuum if all the holes aren't sealed. You could put a little pump on and constantly try to pull a vacuum and the air coming in the holes might stop the oil coming out. But why go to all that complexity when a bit of sealant works.

Cool camera position. That tire looks badass, must ride like silk. Do you know how much it increased your wh/mile during the commute?

i was asked to do longer clips, not edit as much, so here's a longer one from this morning's fairly frisky and horribly irresponsible commute:

Yeah I'd be lucky to break as many laws in a month as you just did in that single video. Though they say admitting guilt is the first step to rehabilitation :P
So just to confirm, in the US the dotted line down the middle of the road between 2 lanes of cars is the bike lane ? :P
The bit with the stop sign was cool, would have been great with a rear facing camera too - showing you pulling away from all the traffic.

couple more days of riding and my fondness is growing. :D

the rear brake is awesome. i've locked it up a couple times in traffic, and the stopping force is awesome. the brake levers fit two fingers perfectly, tho i only use one on the right. the rear brake is silent tho the front still hisses, perhaps because of the silly rotor pattern causes uneven wear. works ok, but much harder to lock up.

anyway, the feel of the rear wheel is great. not perfectly round/true, but couldn't have cared less about those little jumps. might need a stiffer coil as the suspension was definitely working.

the tire pressure is up at 35psi or something, so not soft like the first time i tried it. the nobbies give it some softness tno. from 25-26 mph, the groove pattern causes a disconcerting shuddering, but i'm getting used to it.

the speed in the 9x7 was pathetic, but in the hs3540, i'm VERY pleased. 49mph going downhill under the tunnels? 43 easy on the flat. at 20s? seems as fast as the 26" bike wheel, but MUCH stronger. it was super windy yesterday afternoon, and i'd have been tossed around normally, nowhere near as much as other bikers, but enough to warrant caution as i went crossed the North South streets that the wind was barrelling down, but i felt VERY stable. i've been meaning to research the gyroscopic effect of this much mass on the wheel - makes sense that it'd mean better balance, right?

so no veloman, it's not like silk but something much more forceful and determined!

oh, yeah, and the cooling is working great. :D

so is this the perfect wheel combo for me, of high speed and strength for jumps? seems so! i don't want to judge prematurely...

i lack the torque of a mac or a cromotor, true but those have other issues...

But if you're running 4kw+ into that HS, torque has still got to be comparable to a Mac on a "dependable" 2kw. It looks like you come off the line absolutely fine...

I still need to ride a DD on real power to get a good comparison to my Mac.

haha for the kids watching at home, a 9x7 is NOT pathetic on 20S. For all intentions and purposes you're riding a light weight motorcycle... and being chased by hitmen judging from your videos  Your riding style and the performance you've come to expect is far from that of a normal bicycle. I'm not having a go, at all, but the 9Cs are pretty damn good for what they are. You're just a manaic :P

Yeah I wouldn't subscribe to the hype of geared motors if you haven't tested them back to back yourself.
I'm not hating on Macs, I have one myself but as veloman says you can't really take them past 2kw reliably. So if 2kw is your cup of tea then sure but if you want big power then it's larger DDs all the way.

It's a bit like saying a good looking transexual (mac) makes a better date than Betty from accounts (large direct drive ). If you want to have dinner and go dancing with a skinny good looking specimen then take the tranny over the heavier set Betty. But when it comes time to get down to business the tranny ain't going to deliver what you expect. It'll have balls but not the sort you're after. The tranny also strips... it's gears. And lets not even discuss it blowing up in your face if you ride it hard

Yep thats the crossroads I'm at too, in the quest for more and more power you need to look at how and where you can get away with riding it. My fighter atlready sticks out like dogs balls so I don't like to ride it in public but bolting a 5400 in a motorcycle rim with a 3" tyre to a normal bicycle ain't exactly subtle either. Although it is with great relief that our local laws here have been relaxed form 200w to 250w
I've deliberately held off on ordering a shipment of cromotors for this reason but the little devil that's sitting on one shoulder is starting to wear down the little angel sitting on the other :P

hyena,

when i get my cromotor back from jrh....i'll have to decide for myself if the 5404 or the cromotor is more "xena" like. I need to first get my 18fet controller settings figured out...so i don't destroy again....

yeah, and i'll need another sensorless controller!

made it through the week ok. my lower back's been killing me, so not interested in any funny business, especially working on the damn thing.

too bad, cause this afternoon, there was a reediness in the acceleration, a misfire, very very similar to the feeling last time, when a hall wire was shorted against the motor.

if that is happening again, the problem will be the wiring around the suspension. there's so damn much travel, and i can't simulate it in the garage. i figured if the wires crossed onto the frame at the pivot there wouldn't be much stress on them. i don't know. there's not a lot of clearance for the pedals, so it doesn't seem like there's a good place anywhere to run the wires....

i'll test it out tomorrow. i just drove home real easy, cause it seemed like it happened only under heavy load.. which i honestly can't understand either.

oh yeah, and here's a blur of a couple days worth of commuting, in a mad hurry to get to my awesome job, and back.
