Hasn't gone entirely well though, these pics are from yesterday.
The guy I built this bike for was involved in a pretty nasty accident on a bridge not far from here, 3 days ago.
He doesen't remember how it happened because of concussion, or for that matter no memory of whether he was coming or going.
Had a full face helmet on so his head is OK now.
Lost 2 fingers on the left hand which have been sewn back on, still touch and go whether they stay on. Not sure how thats going to affect his career as a first class sheet metal worker.
Broke left arm above the elbow. Bruises and cuts all over.
Nasty scar over left eye, vision not affected.

We suspect some drunk driver plowed into him from behind. They took off. No witnesses apparently.

He's currently in hospital and will be there for christmas at least.

Looks like he was hit from behind and was pushed into the bridge railing.

From the looks of the bike it had absorbed a lot of the shock but not enough unfortunately.

Picked up the bike from the police yesterday, Lipo's are all ok despite being left on for 2 days in the holding compound.

Some rear spokes are broken but the major damage is at the front.

Wow.. how terrible... best wishes to the rider. I've gotten rear ended and sent 30feet on my motorcycle.. it's a scary experience.

That's my biggest fear when riding on the street... having an accident that would prevent me from doing my every day work.

How did the battery case hold up?

Damn that is just terrible at least he is still alive. Agreed on the helmet I need to get a full face one myself.
Crazy that he doesn't know what happened and no witnesses.. Hopefully his memory comes back to him.
keep us updated how he's doing please such a sharp bike also.

The battery box & batteries remain undamaged, just a couple of scratches in the powder coating !
Stainless steel would have to be one of mankinds greatest inventions, right up there with such things as glass and language.

Brutal. Was this his first ebike? Best of wishes to him. Hate to hear about this. Glad he's alive.

Nah it wasn't his first ebike, had 2 previously, only golden motor ping powered types before though.
He's a good rider without any doubt (I will only put ebikes together for people/adults with at least half a brain).

Being hit from behind by a car dosen't make much difference to the type of pedly tho, probably.

He's getting his arm rebroken and set today, could be home by the weekend now, fast healer apparently, very fit.

Anyway, welcome to ES! So sorry to hear about your accident, err, uh, assault.

That finger doesn't look good at all. Have you been out of the hospital long? If so, I'd head on back in a hurry! If that's gangrene, you got to have it stopped ASAP before you loose more. Any idea what severed the fingers? They must have been somewhat clean cut for them to even try putting them back, no?

How's the memory then? What do you remember? Stopping at a light and then waking up in the hospital?

I just put a rear view mirror last week, nice compact bar end style. It works great, I can easily check behind me whether riding or standing at a light, which is where I feel most vulernable. You always got to be watching your back out there.

Brett lost his left little finger from the end knuckle, could have been a lot worse.

We took off the battery box the other day to be unfortunately greeted by this

Looks like the frame took more of a beating than previously thought.

So we put the motor, battery box & wiring on his older diamondback frame, hoping to salvage at least that out of it, but had gone no further than a few metres when this transpired

Yep the axel snapped. Much better that this happened at 5kph than 50kph I suppose.

Still no memory of what happened on the night. We always use mirrors around here, once you've used 'em once you just can't go back to not having one.

Why is there no visible rear wheel damage, he was hit from behind?

One of the rear spokes is missing and another next to it is bent,the rest of the rear wheel appears to be fine still dosen't proove a rear clip from a car though. He only seems to remember leaving here to get a subway and waking up in hospital in brisbane 80kms away.

Hey Brettster, sorry to hear about your accident mate. I know this isn't the sort of thing you want to think about at a time like this (I am not a filthy ambulance chasing lawyer), I had a mate get hit by a hit and run driver on a motorbike in similar circumstances in NSW (who have a similar program to QLD). He got full compo of all his medical bills (which were pretty extensive) even though the driver was never found. Given the seriousness of your crash, you should think about lodging a claim with the criminal compensation fund.

Yes, they did say "he must have been going pretty fast to slide that far" and "it seem's to weigh a fair bit more than the average electric bike that we have encountered before" .....can't possibly think why they would ask such questions,myself,but there you go....... when your there.....as they say.
Lost about 7mm off the little finger on the left hand in the end.

Thanks philistine but I dont really want to get involed with any legal stuff at this stage been through that before and too much drama in the end for me.

My arm is recovering nicely and my finger needs a bit of time yet.
I've moved all the recoverable stuff over to my diamondback frame, it goes well with the 32a/h li-poly pack powering the 9x7 sannykung/golden motor on.

Surprising performance, I think the lighter motor works well, better take off than the 12x5 hs3540 for sure, 70kph top speed.

Just saw this thread. Wow, I hope his hand recovered & he can use his fingers again.

This is a very good reason to take along a video camera of your rides & make sure the video is pointed in high rez to resolve a license plate.
