Putting together a build for a mate who has left the petrol fold and gotten the e-bug

Basic Electra frame, no welding. Not yet anyway. Makes a nice change.

Inspired (more than) just a little by Dan Pendleton's awesome boardtracker with 3540 rear.

Similar forks and light arrangement, with downbars.
Planning to use Mxus 45mm rear and 29 mm front motors to create an old-school drum brake look. And move it forward.

Batteries won't be monster for starter, twin 48v batts at this stage, ~13ahr each. Will probably get it rolling first with batts in panniers and take the option of a tank from there...

EDIT: In keeping with my habit of naming custom builds after rockstars, welcome to Project Lemmy

Got the frame back fast from the coaters.

Now to make the laser cut dropout plates with some disc tabs.

Very cool. My favorite frame style. Watching and cheering with glee!

Dual motors seem to be under-rated . If you run single motor, the way to more power is to raise the volts and use a lower Kv model, then (of course) use as many amps as you can without overheating it.

With dual motors, you can get outstanding acceleration and traction with just 48V. Imagine the 45mm and 28mm wide stators combined into one motor on the back, it would be a 73mm wide stator! and that's 23mm wider than a Cromotor...And, even though hubs are not great at shedding heat, whatever heat there is to shed now has the surface area of two motor shells with which to do it.

Ha! Indeed Ron. The front MXUS was almost the same price as a convention bike hub so it kinda made sense to match them. Might run dual controllers and ensure that the customer only ever uses the front motor on the street for legal reasons ;)

It'd be kinda cool to flick both batteries over to series at 98 volts and run the big MXUS in "Evade" mode. I doubt the current battery arrangement would dish up many amps but there's always upgrades :)

I'd be happy with 80Nm out of both motors combined. It's a bit of a show pony this one ;)

Thanks Willow, love your black one. I grabbed the frame alone on ebay several months back, wish I'd grabbed all five now!

Knocked out some CAD for the twin 8mm torque plates, and added ISO tabs to one side, hopefully in the right spot.
I'll 3d print some and check.

Five frames for Townie's! WOW! I'd be thrilled to find one!

Yeah I think the importer sold off a lot of warranty stock.

Hindsight ;)

I am not showing of, but if my bike could be of some help, there is my thread on ES.

Never a crime to show your work. Lovely stuff! What are the hubs? Small geared?

Looking good already Sam. Which model brooks saddle is that?

I think you've convinced me to do a Ruff soon.
This Electra is going to Jo from down Warrnambool way on the coast. If there's a few of us we should have a cruise and form an outlaw ebiker group.
How does Sons of Apathy sound?

Is that cant as in sanctimonious, or angled? Or should that have been a 'K' for Immanuel Kant And this 'Bear SED,' is that about CARRYING a stream editor, or is it a stream editor for bears?

Yeah, I know, you're TOTALLY apathetic to how confusing your one word slogan on the tshirt is.

I was going to retort.
But I couldn't be arsed.

I call Sergeant-at-arms!
Certain leather vest clad people in my town may not see the joke

We should take them down to the Queenscliff Hotrod Run 1st of Feb 2015
Definitely get a ruff! sam, very solid construction. Only problem I've had with mine was that the headtube was slightly warped. just needed a bit of dremeling to convince the headset to seat.
And they are loooooong bikes. Much longer than an Electra. Ill show you what I mean once ze'Germans have delivered my rear rim.

Leather clad germans and reaming out rims? Off topic sir!
Not my idea of a biker club at all! :D

That sounds like a good date to aim for in Feb!

Hahaha now your just reading what you want to read pal!

Finally got some bits. Damn this headtube is long. I'll need to add a quill adapter to extend the steertube another 50mm.

Yep - super long. I had to get a new steerer tube turned up for my black DNM forks on my cruiser... Not the easiest job getting the old tube out and the new one in.

You ought to see the tube on the KHS large townie style. I'm certain it's even longer. I'm watching to learn how you solve it and now have another new term "quill adapter". Thank you google and Samd! I need an Ebike building buddy in Minnesnowta!

I dropped the quill post extender in and tightened it up good. Then tapped a star fangled nut into the top of the quill extender.

This gave me another 50mm at the top of the steer tube.

Added three shims at the right height to adapt the 1 inch steerer to a thicker 28.5mm gauge and I am done. Rock solid.

Important to note that the top and bottom bearings on the headtube still contact the full length of the steerer tube. The extension just gives a connection for headstem and takes the steering forces only.
